I'm glad they're keeping the Roe Wolfe building, but the result looks weird to me. If they're already going to temporarily move that building off-site to construct the parking garage, maybe they should just slide it next to the Foundry building and create a more contiguous structure?

I think it looks odd too, but didn't read about them moving the building. Makes sense to abut the two.

They poured the 1st elevated parking slab for the 128 2nd St N / 128 1st Ave N building. It is moving pretty quickly now that foundations are done.

Initial marketing is online for this project -- 'Second & Second' -- https://secondandsecond.com

It's mostly to get ahead of the retail leasing. Being advertised are spaces 1,000-14,000 square feet.

Here is the brochure.

In the brochure it says "future boutique hotel" where the old foundry building is... originally that was planned as office space right?

Correct. Latest I've heard is that the area between Aria & the Foundry building will be the West Elm Hotel. The filings for the Archive apartments (where West Elm was originally slated to be) references their underground parking will be used for hotel.

A fine street wall coming together.

Indeed. It would be great if someone would come up with an appropriate way to dress the two exposed ends of the parking ramp. Having the Hennepin side completely hidden remover a major eyesore. This view is amazing. I remember when Cunningham Architects first restored the Itasca. It seemed like a fools dream to think the North Loop would become such a wonderful place to live, work, dine, be entertained and shop.

Tearing it down completely and building buildings at both ends would do the trick.

It would have been nice if they didn’t attach the damn thing to the Maverick apartment

There's currently a waiting list to get contract parking in that ramp, so probably not going to tear it down anytime soon.

From my own experience, parking in this neighborhood between 9:30am and 3pm during the week means circling the block/s for 30 minutes waiting for a spot to open or parking between T3 and the Twins stadium. There is a high demand that will only increase once "TMBR" construction starts.

I mean, as you say, these "parking problems" are almost always solved by just parking a little further away. Maybe there need to be PSAs on the radio to spread the word. There needs to be a culture shift where people stop expecting to be able to park directly in front of their destination.

If people are circling around the block trying to find an available parking spot, then the price of parking is too low. That's a basic Donald Shoup principle.

While that is part of the problem one of the bigger issues is lack of enforcement for vehicles staying in a spot for multiple time durations. Sure it's a violation, but not one that the City actually enforces, as long as they get their money they don't care. What we're seeing in the NL is a lot of the construction workers are taking the street spots starting at 6am and camping out til 2pm. They just refresh the meter every few hours so the space never turns over. Costs are often being absorbed by the developer, so the workers don't care what the rate is.

I know some office workers in the North Loop who do the same thing. Seems like the solution is a combination of enforcement and increased prices.

Or real transit.. Like the 7 and 14 are the weirdest bus routes in downtown. If they were to say, not be as weird, people like me who take the bus from literally 1 mile away won't have to wait 30 minutes for a bus to go 8 blocks down Washington at 8:30am on a Monday. Even a 4 block walk can be a mental barrier for people to want to take transit to work.

As someone who takes the 14 the other way from downtown, trust me I kno how flaky that route is and how long it takes to get through downtown. Bus lanes now.

Tons of spots around here have been/are being blocked off. Once these projects finish up we'll get back a bunch of spots. Then just price them correctly and it should be all good.

Yes, the meter rates could probably stand to be increased, but the facts on the ground are pretty clear that there are, in fact, not enough parking spots in the immediate area to support the burgeoning regional retail, dining, and entertainment hotspot that the area is becoming.
