"This is too tall, we aren't downtown!"
Please tell me that's a comical exaggeration and somebody who lives in downtown seriously didn't try to argue that the Mill District isn't part of downtown.
Noooooope. Direct quote.

But, Anondson is correct. There's absolutely no way this wouldn't pass the CPC as-is, and no way the council wouldn't reject and appeal. Hopefully the developer is aware of this and sticks to their guns.

And now it's quoted in the Strib

"At the meeting, several audience members, who identified themselves as living in nearby condos, voiced their displeasure with the project’s height and scale and said the project would tower over nearby residential buildings blocking sightlines and light."

Downtown neighbors don’t like tall buildings downtown.

Ugh. Luckily, there's not a snowball's chance in hell that the CPC or Council would reject a 17 story building here, so it shouldn't be a big deal.

On a less frustrating note from the meeting, the Garden Communities guy said that their financing isn't going to be dependent on a specific rent for the retail space, so there's no worries about it sitting vacant until that unicorn high-end restaurant shows up or whatever. Time will tell.

Great to hear! I hope they get going about the same time; it'd be nice to see all that crane activity in a relatively small area!

I know we're all "build it, build it, build it" but this design is trash. The scale is all wrong. As is it should be 12-13ish stories max in my opinion.

This building is 187'. Washington Avenue right-of-way is 120' wide. The ratio is about 1.5:1, which is totally appropriate.

Drove by yesterday afternoon and saw a sign by the entrance to the parking lot stating it closes permanently on February 1. Here we go.

Oh man, maybe they'll clear the sidewalks while they're at it.

Garden Properties presented to the DMNA tonight. No changes since city approval, obviously, but groundbreaking is scheduled for March 25th. They're looking at a mural for the blank wall facing American Trio Lofts.
