Minneapolis Capital Long Range Improvement Committee (CLIC)

Postby twincitizen » August 25th, 2014, 9:41 am

There are openings on the CLIC: http://minneapolismn.gov/boards/openings/WCMS1P-129756

As far as I'm concerned, every urbanmsp'er should be applying for these seats. Especially those living in the outlying districts.

The Minneapolis Capital Long-Range Improvement Committee (CLIC) was created to make recommendations to the City Council and Mayor on the five-year capital improvement program.

Deadline: Open until filled. The application review process will begin Friday, October 10, 2014.

Vacancies: There are 33 vacancies for terms beginning on 01/01/2015 and expiring 12/31/2016. Two citizen appointments from each ward (seats 1 through 26) and seven Mayoral appointments (seats 27 through 33).
Note: seats may have incumbents seeking re-appointment.

Meetings generally occur on Tuesdays at noon in City Hall and last one to two hours
Well, that's a fantastic way to ensure resident involvement!

Yeah, I saw this thread, and was going to apply, but... 1-2 hour meetings at noon, 2-3 times a month? That'll be hard, even with my fairly flexible job.

Yep. The Met Council holds its LRT CAC meetings at 6 or 6:30pm and even those are tough to get to, but at least they're actually trying to accommodate people.

Perfect for retirees, precisely who we want deliberating the future of our cities.

All kidding aside, it is pretty damn inconvenient for most folks with inflexible work schedules. I think in this case, my bosses would be entirely supportive of me taking time off to fulfill this obligation. A co-worker is on the Housing Board of Appeals, which also meets during the workday if I'm not mistaken. If one is serious about this commitment, I don't think it is out of the question to request off work well in advance. The meeting schedule will likely be available and predictable for the entire year, if not the entire 2-year term. Unfortunately, it does rule out any resident who works far outside of the city and lower-income service sector workers who almost certainly have inflexible schedules and supervisors.

But one shouldn't have to get work exemptions! Hold the meetings during non-work hours. Yes, that leaves out 2nd- and 3rd-shift workers. Better outreach to those people can help close that gap.

I don't feel qualified enough to make recommendations to the City Council and Mayor.

Why not? This is the #1 reason good people don't serve and it's the #1 reason the same old clique gets to make all the decisions. It's a lie. You know plenty because you live in the city and experience it every day.

About a year ago, one of the Planning Commissioners (who shall remain nameless) asked, on the record, what a small area plan is, and they weren't doing it for the benefit of the audience.

Please for the love of urban planning, we need UrbanMSP-ers stacked on this committee. The meeting times suck but if you work downtown, apply. I totally agree with twincitizen that old farts need need not apply.

I actually have a mostly filled out app saved, where I almost finished but bogged down when it asked for references. I'll finish that up and get it in.

I'm just glad they're a committee and not a team.
The problem with being an introvert online is that no one knows you're just hanging out and listening.
