I saw on NextDoor that Star Moon itself closed down not too long ago. We won't miss it. The promise of convenient Chinese takeout was much much much greater than the actual execution. Quality aside, we were surprised it closed given the amount of work put into splitting that bigger space so the restaurant only needed half. I'm eager to see all three retail spaces fill in with something more interesting. This sale news is promising.

Speaking of 48th and Chicago and the Shop in the City drama: we went in there on Saturday and picked up a few random greeting cards. Mrs.Shoes chatted a bit with the owner lady. She repeated some of the same lines we've heard elsewhere: that the rent was too high, the building was in disrepair, the roof leaked and they couldn't even use the whole space they were paying for, etc. Oh, and that she grew up in the area and was one of the first shops to help transform 48th/Chicago from the seedy place it used to be and she feels more than a little put out that she has to leave. She also claimed (guessed? exaggerated?) that once Harvey fixes up the building, he'll rent the space out for $10k/mo and she'll never be able to afford that. Or he'll split it in two. I guess we will all just wait and see.

We've been sarcastically mourning the loss of all those awkwardly posed pet photos and eagerly awaiting news of a replacement business. This sounds interesting!

Anecdote about the photography shop: some friends of ours got a coupon for a free (reduced?) photo session for their dog. Went in, took the pics, etc. The photog was borderline livid with them when that's all they wanted. Obviously, proprietors hope coupons like that turn into add-on packages and additional sales, but sometimes people just want the free shit.

The Mount Olive Lutheran Church parking lot (SE corner 31st St and Chicago Ave) is getting demolished this morning. Anyone know of any development plans there? I don't see a project listed on the CPED Planning & Zoning site, so this may very well be replacing the parking lot.

Not to be confused with Mount Olivet Lutheran Church, which appears to be putting up a major new addition at the moment. But is not located on Chicago.

Looks like there is a geothermal HVAC permit issued to Watson Forsberg who built the new Walker Methodist church.

Here is a link from church about ongoing improvements.

It's such a small building. I wonder what's viable in that little space.

New barbershop coming to 4813 Chicago - Southside Barber Lounge. Mike Saeger is one of the best - he used to be up at The Barber Sharp in NE. He opened Southside Barber Lounge last year at 38th & Bloomington. His business partner will continue to operate that location while Mike gets 48th & Chicago up and running...his email says they'll open June 1 (masks required, etc.)

Old news at this point, but El Burrito Mercado (fmr. Pepitos) has closed. That's a huge restaurant space.

Aforementioned barber shop is going into the old Bikes and Pieces location. 'Twas a great bike store and I'm glad he's planning to operate out of his home. http://www.bikesandpieces.com

The owners of the Pepitos space (it'll always be Pepitos to me #oldman) said they are optimistic they'll be able to find a new tenant post-pandemic, particularly given the large space and its ability to effectively separate tables.
