I prefer sober discussions, but that filled me with glee.

Maybe we will see a future post there with a theory why Whittier is so much less hostile to the profiteering developer than the proper tax-paying land-owning Wedge folk with rights...

Renters are transients is the best comment on there.

Honestly, this Peter Kim guy has got me all riled up. I'm embarrassed to share a first name with him.

Anti-development people are pretty adept at self-parody. Urbanists do not help their cause with lame spoofs.

I love the restoration spoof. Makes as much sense as some other stuff I've read from the nati people.

Luckily they don't know where Douglas Avenue is, so he's safe.

You ask, Wedge residents deliver:
Please don't attribute the actions of a single group to all neighborhood residents.

Hardly, just taking the developer and the city more time to work on finding solutions to neighbor's concerns. Something will get built there. Right now it is just what will it be.

Glad to hear! I just moved back to MN this past Monday from Chicago and am spending the weekend checking things outand taking photos. Been away 5 years. Things change but stay the same. Glad to be back but realizing jut how much opportunity Mpls. (both downtown and it's more urban neighborhoods) still have for larger/taller/denser developments. I am starting to get so many people's obsession with building taller buildings. I'd love to see two-story buildings of little significance along major corridors be rebuilt with a minimum of 3-story buildings.

This is still happening! Email from the developer:

"A lot of meetings and a lot of design changes…. dropped the height of the ramp, eliminated a lot of building bulk and the architect is currently working on the exterior design materials, etc. We’ve successfully eliminated our application for a variance of an increase in FAR. We now have a rezoning petition, 2 variance for side yard setback reductions, a CUP for increase in height and a CUP for a principal parking facility."

continued:

"The ramp is 4 stories with the top story (for now) being open air with no lid on it. So from the neighbors to the west’s perspective, it looks slightly over 2 stories high (with the grade change and the no lid on the top floor). The housing is still 6 stories along Franklin and at the intersection. Along Lyndale, the building becomes 5 stories tall south of the restaurant. Then the building switches to 4 stories at the very end, to better transition to the retail to the south of the site."

Sounds like the scale will work better with the surrounding area compared to the original design proposal, which I thought was a bit too bulky for that intersection. The developer did an admirable job of listening to concerns and responded well. That said, I'm sure there will be a few people living in the vicinity who oppose any new project happening. So be it and time to move forward with a project that will be a great improvement to the area.

It wouldn't matter if they made it 3 stories all around. This one has already kicked up so much among naysayers it is going to require heavy participation and engagement by those of us in favor. Also, it unfortunately has to follow 2320 Colfax as the "next big development battle" in the neighborhood, which really organized the anti- crowd. On the other hand, 2320 Colfax organized pro-development folks as well, and this development is much more clearly of net benefit to the neighborhood. To any outside observer, this development is slam dunk.

Yeah I have a feeling the residents are attached to the parking lot and dont want to let it go for whatever reason

I think they would just prefer a 2-3 story building... but that's probably not economically feasible at the location... and they don't understand that.

How lucky the Wedge is to have developers who are so sensitive to context and neighborhood input. If only they realized it.
