Closing, but no proposal. That seems odd. We (the streets forums) are usually WAY out in front of these things.

This must be one of the more valuable plots in Uptown? It'll be great to have something notable here.

Does anyone know if Arby's decided to close on its own or if the landowner (Supervalu/Cub) is kicking them out?

If the sign goes, we riot.

The sign could go in MoZaic Park. Or on top of Graves' condo building.

How long will the plot sit vacant? I'm wondering if it's a long term scenario similar to the corner space in Calhoun Square. Great location but too high of a premium.

StarTribune reports on the closing, knows just as much as we do. What would people most like to see here?

An amusement park where people can operate pile drivers for fun.

I'll get the "80 story supertall" and "SWLRT subway station" suggestions out of the way so we can dismiss them early.

How about a large and well designed marquee building built on this lot and the Cub Foods lot with an outdoor plaza going across Lagoon with connections reaching from the Greenway across W. Lake?

Man, I was thinking about digging up an image of the Duval Gateway proposal to post, but I guess I wont.

Building a mixed-use building with a slightly smaller Cub location would be one way for Supervalu/Cub to get a new store without having to close the existing one for a lengthy period of time. That said, in a perfect world I'd prefer the Cub be rebuilt as part of a proposal on its current site. The Arby's island block has no obvious "backside" for truck and trash access, etc. and therefore doesn't seem well suited to a large grocery store with those access needs.

If all we get on this site is a mostly rectangular 6-story stick building, color me unimpressed. This is the ideal site for a unique, triangular building. The higher development costs of a triangular building (what does that underground parking look like, etc.) could mean that we'll see something taller to get the unit count up. I won't hold my breath, but yeah my hopes are pretty high here.

Do we assume Lagoon is still going to cut through the block though?

I would like to see a 7-8 story triangular shape apartment building with some cool lighting that serves a gateway and beacon welcoming people to Uptown. I know that height might is tricky economically based on the extra cost of all concrete construction compared to 6 story stick built so the developer might have to go 9-10 to make it work. With demand continuing to show almost no signs of dropping, and very few projects in currently in the pipeline, I wouldn't be surprised if the developer could demand quite high rents to build something very cool.

Has there been any indication that the city is interested in giving Lagoon up? (County? Who's responsible for Lake St.?)

When taking a random guess at the status quo vs. a right-of-way vacation and major street re-alignment (of a County Road no less), I'm gonna put my money on status quo.

Sure, the sidewalks around the island will be widened and whatnot, but there's no reason to expect changes beyond the site. Unless, of course, Supervalu's ready to do something big with both blocks.

Interestingly, it wasn't always so. Even after Rainbow and Arby's were built, Lagoon wasn't quite fully connected to Lake at Dupont. You actually had to turn, rather than the smooth curve of today.
