Prison is currently inaccessible to me as a place to move to, which is fine because I in no way want to live in prison. You're talking about not concentrating poverty, but dispersing immigrant poverty wouldn't be desirable to that immigrant community. There's certainly people that want to live in this neighborhood, so it's not like we're "forcing" them. There IS a special need for housing at this site, Cedar Riverside is the landing point for most (all?) Somali immigrants in our area. By that nature they're going to be incredibly poor, and be incredibly dependent on support services located in this area. They can't speak, read, or write English. Many of them can't read or write Somali, which makes it even harder to teach them English. They certainly can't drive to low wage job, if they had a car. They can't hold any job. They need services provided by the Cedar Riverside Tenants Association, and other organizations that are hyper close to this area.

Restricting the supply of housing in Cedar Riverside does endanger someone's ability to live in Cedar Riverside, because if it's not there they can't live in it. I understand not wanting to concentrate poverty, but you seem to be holding that goal above having an actual workable living solution, rather than some ideal population distribution.

This is affordable housing but it's demand side, not supply side, meaning the government is making it cheaper to build, rather than paying for people to live there (though I'm not sure if you can then use Section 8 vouchers in such a project). Without Section 8 vouchers, these end up being around average priced, which
There was an excellent article on Slate today that reminded me of this debate: http://www.slate.com/articles/news_and_ ... ality.html

Full tower crane is up. This general area now has 11(!) tower cranes and the giant crawler.

Caught a glimps of this from the green line last week and it looks like it is coming along nicely. Does anyone if this is topped off or are there still stories yet to construct. I was not able to get a good long view to count.

The corner facing the Cedar-Riverside LRT station is topped off, but there's another part of the 'h' that is just getting started.

It will be interesting to see how the parking plinths between this project and Cedar-Riverside interact. You can sort of see the condition in the Google Maps aerial of this location under construction.

Nice to see this area finally getting some attention from the city in terms of improvements to the streetscape, etc. and also from developers.

So I hate to be that guy, but does anyone have any idea when this will be complete? Not seeing any marketing on it yet.

Late Spring is memory serves me right. We should probably see marketing materials and a website pop up after the first of the year. It's not a high-visibility project, but the developers shouldn't have any issues filling the building due to its location.

Coming along. They are starting a new section on the back (east side).

That looks SO close to Riverside... I didn't realize this wasn't just a long rectangle.

Yea, it's actually a big H shape with two courtyards in between, and part of the building goes very close to that other tower. Those people will be looking at that wall. There goes those great views of downtown!

I see a lot of open space in that pic.....it'd be great to see Cedar-Riverside continue to embrace its role as an immigrant gateway and continue to build out more and more affordable or even subsidized apartments, as was the vision of the area when it was originally conceptualized -- just on smaller scale.

Walked past this yesterday while transferring from Blue to Green, and thought I might as well grab some shots of the space between this and the tower (sorry for the low phone quality):

The two are pretty close, though maybe not quite as close as the first picture seemed to suggest.

Seems really strange that they chose to build the mass of the structure that close. Surely there would have been other ways they could have laid things out to get a similar number of units.

They couldn't build around a 25x100' building; they're not that creative. :/

I think they just don't care....perhaps since many (most?) of the residents have subsidized housing, thinking that they aren't in a position to complain. That's just one theory though and I hope it's not true.

One easy solution would have been to build UP, and not out.

Well, yeah, but then they would have had to move away from stick and actually build a quality building, which is a pretty risky step apparently.
