Appeal granted in support of demolition, 5-1 with Lisa Goodman the only Nay vote.
Only need to round up 2 more votes out of the 7 remaining councilmembers and this is a done deal.

Interesting that CMs Barb Johnson and Kevin Reich changed their votes from 2013 decision (which was unanimous against demolition). I'll have to watch the meeting later to hear what they had to say about that...

Cam Gordon will probably vote against. Not sure who else. This thing could end up 11-2 or 10-3. Huge victory for Lisa Bender, urbanists, and the property owner of course.

They didn't actually say anything. It was just the two Lisas that said anything.

Actually, Andrew Johnson may have said something in support as well now that I think about it.

I think that the rest of the council realized that the house was not going to sell and that it would take too much money to fix it up to a standard that these people who have no money to buy, but feel that have every right to prevent this man from selling his property to a willing buyer.. They have had time to find a buyer, they put it on the owner to find a buyer when it should have been on them to make a bid. They were the ones to fail and finding a buyer, not the owner and his realtor.

Meh. If someone doesn't care enough to do more than copy and paste, I probably wouldn't give a lot of weight to those specific emails either.
If they care enough to copy and paste a letter, they care enough to vote.

Kind of amazing how much energy and time devoted to this one house.

Granting the appeal is now the official recommendation of the Z&P Committee, the chair of the committee (as well as the CM for this property) was on the prevailing side, so the precedent to reverse at full City Council is extremely weak. What will happen at full City Council is that Bender will read the report and move the full report for approval. I doubt there will be any discussion and anyone who chooses to vote no will simply answer during roll call "No on item 1, yes on item 2." I actually doubt Gordon will vote against. My prediction will be approval 12-1 with Goodman opposed.

Andrew Johnson talked about how for him it came down to historic preservation vs. historic renovation/replication. There isn't enough of the building's integrity left intact to mandate preservation, and the City isn't in the business of mandating renovation/replication.

I love how Goodman tried to reference these emails at the end of the staff presentation as showing overwhelming support for preserving the property, and then Bender says that her office looked through them and that most of the emails came from people who don't even live in Minnesota. That kind of backfired.

MRRDC wants us to "look carefully at the quotes" at articles related to this. I don't even know what that means.

As usual, nice to see that everybody opposed to change assumes that anybody in support of change is corrupt, rather than just having a different opinion.

Ugh, Nicole Curtis is now calling Mike Crow a slumlord, and is suddenly saying she's offered to buy the property multiple times.

Are you sure she hasn't? I could completely believe she made an offer that Mr. Crow rejected.

Well, this is the first anyone's heard of it, so I'm not going to take her word at face value, that's for sure.

They may be offering him a price on it as if it were a SFH, whereas he and the realtor have said they're selling it as a rooming house, because that's what it is. And if Lander wants to pay him twice as much as Nicole Curtis does, should he really be compelled to take the lesser offer? That sounds like quite the governmental taking to me.

I don't think the point was that Peter doubted she made an offer. But what relevance does it have? She does have a history of submitting last-minute lowball offers. If I offer a pittance for your property, are you going to take it seriously when you already have a higher offer?

I suppose we could abolish capitalism, that would solve all of these problems, right?

Of course Mr. Crow shouldn't take a lower offer unless he has some reason to do so. The point of the post is that on this site, people make all kinds of unwarranted assumptions about other people, just like Ms. Curtis and MRRDC. We hardly have the moral high ground as far as that's concerned.

More regulation and more collectivism would certainly solve quite a few.
