Glad to see more development on these vast vacant lots. Is any retail/restaurant space proposed in these new buildings? With all these new residential units plus U.S. Bank, Comcast, Red Cross etc near by you would think a lunch place or small convenience store could make a go of it here.

There are some of the best Mexican restaurants in the cities with in walking distance. Granted that most are mom and pop places. But they have great food where I have eaten. There is an SA or Holiday just down Wabasha for your cigs.

Anyone know how often those RR tracks get used which cross the river?

Not real often, probably 5-6 times a day, and they only go about 5 mph across the bridge.

Thune and the Port Authority Quietly Neuter Walkability on Saint Paul’s West Side
https://streets.mn/2015/06/03/thune-and- ... west-side/
Editor’s note: In an effort to bring this time-sensitive news to a broader audience, here’s a quick summary:

Last minute amendments added to a plan to revitalize the West Side flats, a large underused area next to downtown Saint Paul, threaten to strip walkability and green space from the neighborhood while undermining a lengthy community process. In trying to protect existing businesses, the amendments strip out reconnected street grid, efforts to reduce surface parking, and walkable street designs from the Eastern half of the plan area. The public hearing is this afternoon, and a decision by the City Council is expected next week.

Oh the irony. It seems like developers don't give a shit what Thune wants for this land:

First phase of development just south of Sherman's West Side Flats expansion will likely be 160 to 180 apartments. Developers are Dan Hunt and Weidner Apartment Homes. Still lots to work through on that site, though.

Would there be some brownfield contamination that would have to be rectified before they could build??

Wrong link? That story seems to be about a project at 1400 Park in Mpls.

That would be the link to the MAP development site.

Took a friend on a walk thru DT St. Paul this after noon and we walk across the Wabasha bridge to the flats area. I was amazed at how much has changed in the area and the great river walk area that is on top of the flood levee. I definitely can see this area becoming more over a hot spot in the next few years for residential. This project will only be a catalyst for future projects.

I'm kind of surprised St. Paul isn't more eager to get a streetcar across the river rather than down West 7th. Let West 7th become aBRT in the short-term adding Riverview LRT down the line, and focus on streetcar for other areas that are proximate to downtown yet separated and difficult to walk to. This area to Cesar Chavez Blvd, Rice Street, East 7th, etc.

Edit: Or maybe a GONDOLA?

Walking back north up both bridges will make you sweat when it is warm out. You definitely get a workout when you walk back from the Flats to the Downtown again.

Exciting news for the neighborhood! Catrinas Mexican Grill opening this spring in the West Side Flats Apartments! Construction us now underway. Will be very nice to have another lunch option within walking distance for all of the business workers in the area!

7-story proposal in the area. Near Harriet Island.
