The three lane trial on Maryland Ave. in St. Paul proved pretty successful. It will be made permanent.

For a thoroughfare that carries 21,000–23,000 a day thanks a pretty big deal. I hope other cities and counties watch and consider this for segments. A segment of Louisiana Ave in Saint Louis Park (Excelsior to Oxford) for instance carries under 11,000 but is getting rebuilt with four lanes.

AFAIK, the 21-23k section is actually west of Edgerton, which is still 4 lanes. East of Payne is in the 18-20k range. The article seems to have mixed those up a little.

In the past, bringing this topic up on any East St Paul social media group brought a wide-array of impassioned responses. It seems like it is much more muted now; I think people have gotten used to the change and mostly see the benefits.

Does anyone here know much about the Corridors of Commerce program? I'm wondering if we know how soon the scoring will be out for the submissions for this year and what sort of timeline approved projects would be on for construction? Hi-Lake is such a major blemish on South Mpls it would be great to have some substantial improvements there.

I am disappointed to see the City of Minneapolis seeking freeway expansion dollars from Corridors of Commerce.
https://lims.minneapolismn.gov/RCA/2025
The request is for the passage of a resolution defining the City’s support for the following list of projects, in priority order based on benefit for Minneapolis residents, workers, businesses, freight operators, and visitors:

1. Hi-Lake Interchange Reconfiguration (TH 55 at CSAH 3)
2. I-35W MnPASS Lanes between TH 36 and Downtown Minneapolis – Phase 4 of I-35W North Project
3. I-94/TH 252 Freeway Conversion and MnPASS Lanes between Dowling Avenue and TH 610
4. I-94 and TH 280/Cretin Avenue/Vandalia Street System Interchange Reconstruction
5. TH 62 between I-35W and TH 77 Auxiliary lanes
The only one that seems to make sense for Minneapolis is the Hi-Lake interchange reconfiguration.

If only massive highway construction got even 10% of the cost scrutiny that transit does in this state...

It's not going to change anybody's opinion, but there's only $70m going towards the interchange, for Phase 1. The other $134m adds MNpass lanes to 494.

Lol, these are basically all in the metro area to improve commute times. So much for greater MN getting 50% of the grants.

Legit. Potentionally random question, but does MDOT differentiate between the core 7 counties and the greater 16 counties of the metro area? I’m just thinking out loud, but maybe the 9 counties that aren’t in the core, count as greater Minnesota in the eyes?

It actually does meet the requirement, because Wright/Sherburne County (where the I-94 extra lanes and US-169 expressway conversion are) are considered greater Minnesota.

Why does 169 need to be made into an expressway? Just to alleviate congestion somewhat for two evenings a week during the summer?

Are those 169 intersections the four going north from 10? Or other ones. Is that then a two mile stretch costing $150M?

I wonder how they will eliminate stoplight / left turns at the 10/169/101 interchange.

Apologies if this was discussed before as I just found this article and was wondering if they're still trying to get funding for these projects? What do they mean by extending Xenwood? Would it connect 36th and the Highway 7 Service Road or continue under Highway 7 to 35th? And where do they want to extend Lynn?

Street, Road and Highway Projects

Postby Anondson » June 10th, 2018, 8:31 pm

Yeah, this story is over two years old. The Wooddale Station area no longer has a proposed extension of Xenwood under the freight rail to the TH 7 frontage road. Not only was there no aid offered for it, the developer of the McGarvey Coffee site said excavation required to extend Xenwood to the frontage road would make their site less developable.

The Lynn “extension” I recall was to run it over to Monterey behind the office supply warehouse to Monterey Ave. That connection would make the circulation of traffic from the Beltline Station park and ride lot not be a worse nightmare. Pretty sure this did not get funding.

The Louisiana Station wye removal did get included. When it is built there will be a simplified freight connection to the Port of Savage for TC Western to use.

Not sure where to post this. But does anyone really think people suddenly aren’t seeing stop signs and lights? Or are people really just distracted by their phones? Will this accomplish anything?

MnDOT making stop signs easier to see. http://strib.mn/2M1rGRI

I don’t understand that article; the first few paragraphs talk about people intentionally rolling through stop signs, but that’s not what the program seems to be about. The rest of the article is talking about rural intersections and nighttime visibility.

On these long, often straight, very dark roads, I can absolutely imagine someone completely missing the sign on a foggy night, or driving while too-tired and zoning out on the long empty stretches that don’t require a lot of active concentration.

It seems like a very low-cost, low-risk maneuver that at least has the potential to save some lives.
