Minneapolis Parking Meters

Postby grrdanko » April 15th, 2019, 4:22 pm

Looks like most of the free evening and weekend street parking is now gone.

While the demand in most of these areas probably justify these prices (or more) during peak times, it's kind of sucky that there's no mechanism to charge less on, say, a Sunday evening when there's no event going on.

Yeah. Gonna be hard to convince a friend to come over and play a board game on a weekend afternoon if it'll cost $9 for him to park.

I mean, maybe this will convince him to bike instead, but I'm not confident.

It’s not in the city’s best interest to encourage cars. So hike up parking prices to disincentivize cars, and to ensure there are always some spaces available for those who do drive.

Transit becomes a bargain when parking is $9.

People will make better choices when choosing where to live. The availability of transit & bike lanes will encourage people to live there.

Transportation options become a strong factor in choosing where to live. And our planet breathes easier.

It'll be great if they could eliminate or lower the fees during non-event Sundays. Transit is quite sketchy on Sundays I've tried it. I attend a Downtown church and in the middle of winter the car is the best way to get there. Let's face it biking doesn't work for 97% of people during the winter. (Luckily our parking wasn't changed.)
If you don't adjust the prices with demand you just end up with an emptier Downtown.

LRT & BRT has 10 minute headways. Does that include weekends?

Politically, people will learn to fight for better transit if parking is expensive & inconvenient—just as today people fight for better parking when transit is expensive & inconvenient.

LRT and BRT do have 10 minute frequencies even on Saturday and Sunday.

Many of the parishioners at my place of worship come from the suburbs so transit does very little for them. Be a lot of work for a family to get from Roseville to Downtown Minneapolis on a Sunday morning.

Build transit where people live; build housing where transit goes.

Advocate for hBRT on I-35W. Or take the A Line to the Green Line, and use the time you’re not driving to socialize, read, catch up on work, etc.

Transit is liberating.

Surly, what you've clearly failed to understand is that Multimodal will respond like this in every thread, regardless of the context. But thanks for trying.

So rather than consistent thoughts, you’re suggesting random thoughts should be posted in every thread?

Not sure where that would lead.

No real opinion either way on pricing, but cutting back the 8-hour zones in Downtown East is well overdue. It's been very hard to find spots for (IMO) more legitimate short-term use when they're all parked by people getting cheap parking for the entire workday.

One thing that has been frustrating is how expensive ramps tend to be for very short trips -- like many are $6 for 0-20 minutes. I assume due to congestion and process of getting in/out they prefer to disincentivize short parking durations.

It would be nifty if they had some sort of integration with MnPASS or a similar interoperable system to speed this process up. But anyway, unless that changes, street parking remains pretty essential for those short trips.
