These have the wireless payment symbol for Apple Pay, Google Pay, Samsung Pay. Is it confirmed these will accept that nfc payment?

Does it provide change when you don’t have exact fare? Can you pay with your phone? Or use your phone as a Go-To Card? It seems like a lot of money to just add swipeable transfers (and MAYBE credit cards in the future).
It can't provide change. It will accept phone payment(Apple Pay, Android Pay, Samsung Pay), credit cards, and qr codes in 5 - 10 years. The Go-To card readers will be phased out once they are on their last life, and go-to cards will be read on the farebox.

They can actually determine the domination of the bill or coin put in the machine, and will spit back anything that isn't real money.

It's got a pad on top with the NFC logo, so I would imagine it'll be compatible with Go-To cards and/or phones, even if that functionality isn't turned on right away.

15,000 seems like a bit much but given how the old fare boxes are 26-27 years old now they probably needed to be replaced anyways.

Kinda like the idea of being able to use debit/credit cards for payment as it opens up the possibility of different card companies/banks making some form of deal with metro where the companies can offer some form of discount for using their card for transit (think how most cards offer some form of cash back for things like gas)

Twin Cities Rider Union is calling for the abolishment of Metro Transit Police Department and elimination of fares.

While I believe that elimination of fares could be a good thing, fare collection is expensive. After being assaulted on the Blue Line in January of this year, we need more MTPD on the trains patrolling, not less.

I’m sorry to hear about your assault Bakken. That sounds really tough. Thank you for sharing.

I think the elimination of metro transit fares would be a great thing. My only concern is where would we find that extra 30% of funds necessary to make up for the fares.

Getting rid of the Metro Transit police is a horrible idea.

I would be curious to see an experiment that would last about one or two months. Making public transit in Minneapolis free and see what happens to ridership.

Is there any place on Earth, besides Tallinn, where the transit system is free? I'm not talking about specific routes or segments like the free rides along Nicollet Mall, but the whole transit system.

As for police, yes we absolutely need them on the transit system. However watching the video released by Metro Transit, wasn't it enough that the lady was off the bus as requested? Why did the officer need her ID?

Corvallis, Oregon has free public transit. And when they made it free, ridership soared.

Police need to be retrained to deal with situations better, his actions were too aggressive in my opinion. She was not harming anyone.

There will always be the people who commit crimes, and they will use transit. So we need to make sure to keep our riders safe.

Not only are public transit companies having problems filling bus driver roles, school buses are having an even harder time.

Private schools like The Blake School are also looking for bus drivers.

Hey everyone, it's Henry with TCTRU. TCTRU is a democratic, rider-run organization fighting for a just, robust, and reliable transit system. If you don't agree with our stance, then I would like to invite you to our next member meeting and participate in the working group that we are organizing around Policing and Safety. It's on Wednesday, September 26, 6pm. Location TBD; if you wish to get updates, join our mailing list.

Going to try apprenticeships to help with the driver shortage.
