Hour-long video on the restoration project. A bit cheesy like a lot of self-promotional videos, though.

The "Friends of 261," operators of the large steam locomotive based in Minneapolis, will be operating some holiday events out of SPUD on December 4-5-6 and December 12-13-14. Full details haven't been published yet, but, it'll be a Polar Express sort of thing for kids.

Here's their post from Facebook, so you can judge for yourselves: https://www.facebook.com/permalink.php? ... 6741153780
Coming this December
"The North Pole Express"
At the St. Paul Union Depot
Featuring the Milwaukee Road Steam Locomotive 261

Celebrate the Holiday Season at the St. Paul Union Depot this December with a ride behind Milwaukee Road steam locomotive No. 261 to the North Pole! No. 261 will pull short trips around the depot grounds, where children can disembark, visit with Santa Claus, and hear stories of the Holiday season.

See the beautifully restored St. Paul Union Depot, as No. 261 becomes the first steam locomotive to pull a passenger train at the depot since Burlington Route steam excursions of the early 1960s. It's a perfect way to celebrate the Holiday's!

Trip's will operate Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays, December 4-5-6 and December 12-13-14. More days may be added later.

Check http://www.261.com for more information as it becomes available!

Wow that's some embarrassing apostrophe usage.

A lot of times, companies don't actually hire communications staff, especially for social media. They usually just have someone throw it online because, like, the web and casual and stuff.

The post had been made by someone in the 261 group, which would be an all- or nearly-all-volunteer organization.

As much as I get annoyed by misspellings, apostrophes, and other issues, it is also possible to just make a typo here and there.

Does anyone know if Greyhound is running out of Union Depot? I saw a Greyhound bus turn into Union Depot this afternoon.

Julian loved it! The Cedar Rapids Skytop tour was the definite highlight. It was a little sad to contrast the great condition of the Milwaukee Road cars with the quite poor condition of the Great Northern cars.

It was neat to walk through a locomotive cab, though honestly I'd rather have had a close-up of the engine and generator. :)

Ken Avidor notes there's a new mini-library in one of the kiosk trolleys up on the concourse level, but perhaps more interesting is a video game arcade, which looks like it's down in the retail space along Kellogg.

A while back I was malingering in SPUD, after an Amtrak had arrived. A family got off and dad was looking around for a place to rent a car. He ended up jumping in a Taxi to go to the MSP airport and left the wife and kids to wait until he got back.

I think SPUD could accommodate a rental car company (or two) on the street level ticketing area of Kellogg. Adjacent to that is covered parking that could house a half dozen cars (think where the Car2Goes are parked).

I know on Jackson and 7th there is a lonely kiosk with a few cars, but wouldn't it make sense to put that in SPUD? Get a bit more activity in there.

That would make total sense. There's already an Avis and Enterprise downtown. Perhaps it's just a matter of waiting for their existing leases to run out? Adding a third option might be too much supply for the current downtown demand.

At the very least put some ads up in the Depot and even one of those phones that rings directly to the office or something like they do for hotel shuttles at some airports.

"Hey don't go all the way to the airport there are cars here Downtown!"

Vice President Biden will be visiting the Union Depot next Thursday, February 18th, commemorating the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009. That was signed shortly after President Obama took office and was one of the funding sources for restoring the depot.
