Inconvenient for the locals, maybe
That's how we got into the freeway disaster in the first place.

How old is the Nine Mile Creek bridge? I remember when CR 18 was upgraded to US-169 and I remember the bridge over Excelsior Blvd. being built (and almost killing downtown Hopkins). I always assumed the creek bridge was built at the same time but I was very young so I'm not sure.

I have a feeling that area is going to need something huge, complex and ungodly expensive.
Only way to eliminate the weaves and retain existing access, yes.
Does anyone else find it weird that Hennepin Co built cloverleafs at 55, Rockford Rd AND Bass Lake, but somehow skipped MN 7?
Besides what Anondson replied, different eras. Most of what is now 169 between Minnetonka Blvd and 94 was built in the mid-60s. The part around Hopkins (including the MN 7 interchange) wasn't built until the early-80s.

That makes sense. MnDOT seemed to have no problem building non-standard cloverleafs with squished loops next to RR tracks in the 60's (494 and 61, 52 and Civic Center Dr in Rochester, etc)

Off subject, but I've also been curious how MN 7 got a cloverleaf at 494 and 55 didn't - seems like there was no long-term vision or even basic consistency

At the time, there was a lot more along 7 out towards Excelsior and the south side of Lake Minnetonka than there was along 55. 7 was important enough back in the day that it was 4-laned back in the 1930s and 40s, long before 55 needed 4-laning.

Got an E-mail from the project manager. They are indeed building the new Nine Mile Creek bridge as a 6-lane span (striped for 4 lanes) so as to not preclude any future widening or improvement. He said that MnDOT is currently undergoing a "MnPASS/Transit advantage study" along 169 from Shakopee to Plymouth with the intent of gauging how much it would take to add a HO/T lane on each side.

Regarding the ramps at 16th St, he said MnDOT tried to close them a few years ago (ca. 2012-13), but St. Louis Park objected to the closure and so MnDOT backed off.

SLP will have a public hearing over Municipal Consent to close the W.16th street ramps to 169 on Dec. 7th at 7:30pm.

Tempers are high at the public hearing to close the W 16th ramps to 169. Minnetonka residents it seems who cut through the corn of SLP are the ones who most want the ramps left open.

MNDOT trying to get the word out that part of 169 will completely close for a year to rebuild a bridge over Nine Mile Creek.

This open house will run on Feb 10, 4–6PM. Screw this. This is the *second* open house for this 169 project held during work hours. smh

Is that happening I hope after HWY100 is 100% completed?

Correct, the project will not begin until the 494 & 100 work is complete. The MNDot press release clearly states that.

The timing of TH100's lane closing work is set (weather depending) to be completed by the time the 169 stretch closes.

MNDOT is conducting a study regarding transit options and ways to reduce congestion on 169 between Shakopee and Golden Valley. The study will focus on:
– Highway Bus Rapid Transit (BRT)
– MnPASS Express Lanes
– Lower cost/high benefit improvements along the highway such as adding auxiliary lanes, turn lanes, modifying interchanges, and creating ways for buses to get through traffic more efficiently
– Evaluating the potential for expanding bus service on Hwy 169 between Mankato and the Twin Cities Metro area.
There is a survey to take.

Taking the survey you enter a chance to win 2 $25 gift cards.

So this is for after the project that will soon close 169 for a year. Seems like strange timing.

That would be pretty great, as my recent carfree experiment was ended in part by the current crappiness of bus service to Mankato.

Yeah, it does seem anything from this study is to come after the work closure at the end of this year into next.

If you ever wish there was bus service from Mankato to the Twin Cities, MNDOT has a survey for people to give feedback about what they would like in such an intercity bus line.

Mobility survey completed. Over 3,500 respondents.

http://campaign.r20.constantcontact.com ... e86c73a81c
Key themes of the survey results include:
Majority of survey respondents use Highway 169
Half of the respondents said travel time is most important when using Highway 169, followed by minimal congestion, reliability, and transit availability.
Main trip purpose is work, social/recreational events, and shopping
Nearly 2/3 of respondents use Highway 169 every day or at least four to six days a week and drive alone
Majority of respondents experience congestion along Highway 169, with nearly 40% stating that the congestion was significant to extreme

To view the detailed, final results of the survey, please contact Bobbie Dahlke at [email protected]
Next Steps
The study team is developing bus rapid transit (BRT) and MnPASS alternatives. Up to three alternatives will be evaluated and undergo detailed technical analysis. The final results of the technical analysis will be shared with the public in the fall of 2016.

Big shocker, people that took a survey on US 169 use Highway 169 and don't want to be stuck in traffic.
And the 169 shield looks like a Wisconsin county highway marker.

I don't think it's unreasonable for 169 to have three lanes in each direction, like Hwy. 100 does. I'm not sure if that's one of the alternatives but based on traffic congestion and employment growth along the corridor it seems appropriate to add more capacity. I favor mass transit more times than not but I'm not sure how successful BRT would be along this corridor. But maybe UHG, Cargill, and some of the other major employers and employment centers would provide more than enough ridership to take rides off the road.
