Good analysis from The New Republic:

"Held hostage by a hospital"

I completely disagree. He's comparing apples to oranges. Plus, the premise is wrong, completely. Our state appears to just want to wrestle wealth away from successful businesses AND successful people. We're lucky Mayo offered a choice, very lucky.

It's not quite a socialist state, people and businesses still have a choice.

Mayo has decided that Rochester, population 108,000, needs to double in size- From that article in New Republic. That would be quite a feat.

When I moved there, in 3rd grade, in 1987, it was about 57,000 people. So it has doubled in size in about 20 years. I could easily see it around 190,000 in 2030 or so.

I'm looking for a decent, and up-to-date summary of big real estate investments/deals/projects in Rochester since start of 2013 - anybody know a source?

It looks like another new building is planned from the guys developing the Broadway at Center tower. Six stories with a ground level restaurant, offices, and a roof top bar. It is to be called "The Plaza at Historic Third."

Seems to be a bit of a slap in the face to Rochester and the DMC. Wow 3,800. workers, not to mention where they spend their money and the new jobs that too will create.

New campus with up to 3,800 new employees in La Crosse area, just down the road from Rochester. http://www.startribune.com/business/302655361.html

Maybe a ploy for the HSR going thru La Crosse?

No, this is in suburban Onalaska, far from any potential HSR station. This probably isn't as big of a deal as people think: Mayo has been interested in having satellite clinics and hospitals for local healthcare (Mayo Health System) including in Wisconsin. My guess is that this is designed to serve the local Wisconsin market for healthcare that doesn't necessitate travel to Rochester and would otherwise be provided by other networks. My main concern is that this sounds like epic sprawl.

DMC may be a masterstroke or could be seen as one of our biggest flops ever. The taxpayers at the state and local level are committing an awful lot of money not only to infrastructure but increasingly to directly subsidize development all on the promise that a single entity will create an astronomically large amount of jobs. Even if Rochester becomes some 2nd metro, it's economy is going to be so heavily dependent on not just one industry but one company that downturns at Mayo will be absolutely ruinous. Much more akin to the Iron Range rather than the diversified economy of MSP.

Luckily, Americans won't start eating right and exercising anytime soon. (I agree with your concern)

I suspect this has everything to do with competing with Gundersen, which is based in La Crosse and serves a large rural area in Wisconsin and Iowa. In the town I used to live in in NE Iowa, Mayo became provider of clinical services at the county hospital right after Gundersen built a satellite clinic. It's pretty aggressive to go after Gundersen in La Crosse, though.

Says they already employ 3,600 people in La Crosse county, so the 3,800 number most likely includes many already employed by Mayo.

So. Sounds like they want to move their hospital to the sub-urban fringe. I wonder if they'll close their Franciscan Skemp hospital adjacent to the Viterbo University campus, and then move all those people to the Onalaska fringe.
