This probably isn't as big of a deal as people think: Mayo has been interested in having satellite clinics and hospitals for local healthcare (Mayo Health System) including in Wisconsin.
This isn't really new though, is it? Mayo bought out pretty much all of the hospitals and clinics in Mankato.

Definitely nothing to worry about. Their satellite campuses aren't really meant to compete with Mayo. Or at least that's the experience of my family who've used such places.

Yep. The Mankato hospital is part of the Mayo system now, but serious diseases and injuries still get you medivaced to Rochester.

Mayo announced yesterday that they are adding four floors to one of the St. Mary's buildings, among other things. Starting this spring.

Speaking of the St. Mary's campus, there's a large controversy surrounding "hotel row" across the street, since the hoteliers want skyway or subway (tunnel) access to St. Mary's. At least one existing hotel is pre-built for underground access connection, and a proposed hotel was trying to get public funds for a connection leading to claims of impropriety.

The real issue is that SW 2nd St is highly hostile to cross/travel on foot, despite being the primary link between the St. Mary's campus and the other campuses downtown. Some of the DMC "visioning" showed SW 2nd St being a calmed set of slip lanes, basically, with rail transit operating in the middle of the right of way. That seems like a great idea to me, but it's getting pushback. Including from Rep Duane Quam of Byron, who feels like bike lanes are an infringement upon his right to drive at high-speeds through complex urban environments.

Some news from the DMC Meeting today, which is being rescheduled for a later time so that all board members can attend.
The report this year showed $152.4 million in cumulative private investments through the end of 2015. Mayo Clinic reported $85.7 million in expenditures in 2015. Another $20.5 million came from private investments within the DMC boundary area.

The previous cumulative private investment total was $46.2 million, bringing total private investments as of Dec. 31, 2015 to $152.4 million.

This isn't related to Rochester, but to Mayo Clinic in Florida. They just announced a $100 million dollar expansion to their campus in Jacksonville.
http://www.postbulletin.com/business/ma ... 90ae0.html

From what I can tell, here are the basic plans of the expansion...
1. A four story, 150,000 square foot building for "serving those with complex cancer, as well as neurologic and neurosurgical care, with the possibility to triple in size by adding 11 more stories to the structure down the road". They expect upwards of 126,000 patients to this building in its first year alone.

2. "A state-of-the-art positron emission tomography (PET) radiochemistry facility will also be built"

3. Create a "Mini-Medical Destination Center" of the Southeast.
Over the next five years, Mayo's Florida campus is expected to hire 250 new allied health employees to support the new buildings, along with 40 more physicians and scientists. Mayo currently has 5,351 employees and contributes more than $1.6 billion to the Florida economy each year, according to a news release.

In the 2+ years since the Rochester DMC became a reality, it really doesn't seem like much has happened. Some new construction at St. Mary's, but hard to say that wouldn't have happened without the DMC. It's good to see that money is finally being put to use, even if it's in Florida. ;-)

I have a feeling things will pick up once they reach that $200 million investment mark that lets them tap into the State's DMC funding package.
They've accomplished some stuff though..
1. Conley-Maass Building renovations which will feature a new restaurant as well as various labs
2. The Library is going to be expanded, which will use DMC funding
3. The city bought and will renovate the historic Chateau Theater for performing arts uses located in Peace Plaza
4. The Saint Mary's expansion
5. I believe the Buckeye Apartments will get to tap into some DMC funding, but I'm not sure.

It's a shame that the Civic Center as well as the Recreation Center expansions and renovations couldn't use some of that money.

I think the issue is that people expected things to kick off right away and for all of this development to start being done ASAP, but things have always moved a little slower in Rochester than in Minneapolis. They claim that this year and next year that construction and project announcements will start picking up.

also of note, it's amazing how many apartments have been built in Rochester within the past couple of years alone...
After adding an average of just 120 new multifamily units per year between 2011 and 2014, the city’s total of new units spiked to 1,156 in 2015, according to city building permit information. The new apartments added some $142 million in real estate valuation to the city, doubling the $72 million added via new single-family homes, the records showed.

According to KTTC the Lt. Governor, Tina Smith, and James Campbell, who is also a board member for DMC, will be touring the Conley-Maass building tomorrow.

Wonderful news out of Rochester today. 11 different firms expressed interest in helping with the Heart of the City sub-district. I can't wait to see what happens there.
Eleven firms have provided qualifications in response to a request from the city of Rochester and Destination Medical Center Corp. for design of public space in DMC the Heart of the City sub-district. That public space is, primarily, Peace Plaza.
One of the firms that responded includes AECOM who helped with the Gonda Building. Another firm is Perkins-Will. There are numerous international firms as well, such as Behnisch Architekten of Germany, Saki of Shanghai. Other local firms include 9.Square, HKGI, WHKS, WSB, Stance and CRW Architecture and Design Group.

Mayo Clinic announced plans to double its research facilities in the Discovery Square subdistrict of its downtown Rochester Campus. Construction is slated to start in 2017 and be completed in two years. The main focus for construction will be on surface parking lots near the Hilton/Guggenheim Building complex.

In front of a high-level crowd of international bioscience companies Tuesday night at the 2016 BIO International Convention in San Francisco, Mayo Clinic CEO Dr. John Noseworthy and other leaders from Mayo, Rochester and Destination Medical Center announced plans to build a 2 million-square-foot bioresearch campus in downtown Rochester.

The new development will more than double Mayo's research capability in Rochester, where the clinic currently has 1.3 million square feet of dedicated research space. It will feature a combination of research, commercial and product development space within a six-block area located near the Guggenheim Building, between South Broadway and Sixth Avenue Southwest.

plans now call for "a six-block campus of integrated buildings that will be a combination of Mayo Clinic programs and non-Mayo bioscience space — designed for communication, collaboration and collisions between tenants, ultimately bringing solutions to patients sooner."

The Post Bulletin is reporting that Mayo wants to select a development firm from the nine pre-selected firms by the end of July or early August... In turn, the firm will bring on an architect and design a master plan for the new Discovery Square research campus. In the new campus, Mayo will occupy around half (60,000-100,000 sq feet) of the first building.
Construction on the first of Mayo's Discovery Square projects could begin in the fourth quarter of 2017.
Mayo owns about 35 percent of the property in the six-block Discovery Square . . .

Things are moving a little bit for the Heart of the City subdistrict...
The committee agreed to recommend a design team led by RSP Architects, of Minneapolis. The recommendation will be reviewed by the Destination Medical Center Corp. Board of Directors and the Rochester City Council for final approval. The DMC Corp. board meets next on Aug. 25 and the council will consider the recommendation at its Sept. 7 meeting.

M. A. Mortenson Co. will lead Mayo Clinic's development of up to 2 million square feet of research and education space in the Destination Medical Center Discovery Square district, the clinic announced today.
Mayo plans to occupy about half the space in its first building in Discovery Square, which could be 60,000 to 100,000 square feet, according to Doug Holtan, vice-chairman of Mayo department of facilities and support services.

Hopefully Mayo sticks with their time-honored tradition of converting legitimate neighborhoods into awful human-hostile sidewalk frontages!

And nothing says "public square" like having a "translational cloud" (newspeak for skyway intersection) built right on top.

Mayo's 5 year plan is on the city of Rochester's planning and zoning page... here's a list of potential projects to start up that I found interesting (I trimmed down this list by a substantial amount).

East expansion of Mary Brigh Building for diagnostic, treatment and inpatient functions.
Horizontal and vertical expansion of the Generose Building.
Bed tower expansion of East Mary Brigh Building.
Pedestrian skyway from Mary Brigh Building to Generose Building.
Skyway/subway connections north across Second Street and/or west across 14th AvenueSW.
Possible hospital facility expansion east of the Eisenberg Building
Continued expansions/renovations in Charlton, Eisenberg, Colonial & Jacobson Buildings.
Vertical / horizontal expansion of the Jacobson Building.
Renovation/replacement of Charlton North Building.
Phase Three vertical expansion of Gonda Building.
West horizontal expansion of Baldwin Building.
Vertical expansion of Harwick Building.
Major expansion of clinical laboratory, research and education space on Blocks 7 & 12, south of
Hilton/Guggenheim. Initial phases as well as future expansion.

Vertical / horizontal expansion of Opus Building.
New multi-use building and/or expansion of parking on Block 11, North of former Lourdes High School.
Provision for a mixed-use project for patient/staff parking ramp, possibly including education administrative
& utility support – South of Baldwin Building on Block 2.
Subway connection from Dan Abraham Healthy Living Center to Ozmun Building.

Do you know how old that list is? How many of those projects have been completed? I know the Mary Brigh expansion is almost finished. That expansion I believe was to the east, and is now the tallest portion of that hospital. Or is there more expansion?

This list comes from the newest 5 year plan that Mayo released on the 2nd of November. If I remember right, the city has an agreement with mother Mayo to basically do whatever they want on their own property as long as the city is given a 5 year plan of all potential projects beforehand. So these should all be up and coming projects still. In fact, there are even more St. Mary's expansions from the full list (which is absolutely huge) that I didn't include simply because St. Mary's is ALWAYS expanding.

I'm most curious about the timeline of the (always-planned-for) Gonda 20-to-30 vertical expansion. Word is, however, that there are many, many empty spaces (even entire floors?) in the Gonda even as-is.
