Altec HiLine another Duluth company ready to expand, add jobs

Altec HiLine, LLC, is one step closer to its planned Duluth expansion — the latest in a series of company expansions in the city and one that is expected to result in 85 new jobs.

At the end of the article they mention how the upcoming job expansions are expected to add 2,700+ jobs to the Duluth region and Duluth may see a shortage of housing Great news lets hope it all falls into place. Hopefully we'll start seeing some new construction by spring.

Great news for an area that tends to take downturns and recessions much harder than the Twin Cities!

Duluth has set up a program to try to get pop-up stores into its downtown. This really seems like a great idea that any area with some vacant storefronts should be experimenting with.

Happy news!! I sure it's popular with the UofM students as well. Hope to make it up to Duluth this summer and check things out. Would be great if they opened a location in Mpls. as well.

There is a Duluth Trading Company Store at 98th and Lyndale in Bloomington. The success of this store has prompted the construction of the downtown Duluth store.

I sure hope so. I grew up in Duluth and really am rooting for its success, but downtown still is has its challenges. Most growth is still happening "above the hill", there's a perception from many people in the city that downtown is filled with gang violence after the sun goes down (despite few reports of that actually being the case), and Duluthians are not accustomed to paying for parking (above the hill parking is all free, all the time). And, of course, there's the fact that downtown is built on the hill, making getting between the major streets a pain.

Enjoyed a beautiful day up in Duluth yesterday with my Mom for her b-day. We enjoyed checking things out - rose garden, Leif Erickson Park, Canal Park (enjoyed lunch at Canal Park Brewing Co. - highly recommend). Things were hopping. Also took some pics in Old Downtown. Really love this city - so many great old buildings still and excited to see that it appears more and more are being rehabbed for new uses - NorShor/Old Opera Temple are still going to be rehabbed, Tycoons, another brew pub opened up in old city hall. The owners are the same as those who own Fitgers and several other area restaurants etc.

Interesting it appears Superior Street is in the works to be completely reconstructed with new streetscaping as well:

This is such a good idea, why can't we do this in downtown Minneapolis? We aren't lacking in empty storefronts especially on Nicollet and Hennepin.

Essentia Health is planning a major redevelopment of its flagship campus in downtown Duluth.

Not Mayo-big, but this could be a huge project for Duluth. The article hints that some older parts of the campus (which was developed piecemeal over the last century) could be converted to housing.

Dr. David C. Herman, Essentia's CEO, said it's too early to know exactly how much the health system will spend as it revitalizes the sprawling campus on the east end of Duluth's downtown. But he said it will exceed anything Essentia has spent before anywhere, including the $91 million to build the First Street Building, which was completed in 2006.
