Duluth - General Topics

Postby Tiller » January 29th, 2016, 3:40 pm

A friend just sent me this link:
http://www.cdinduluth.com/#constructionboom

There wasn't really a general Duluth thread to put it in.

Duluth Boom: Will it continue or bust?

Postby duluthnative » July 24th, 2016, 10:36 am

Several projects in Duluth have just been completed: the Maurices headquarters, Pier B, Bluestone Flats and the Holiday Inn Express. Several are under construction: Endi London Road, Kenwood Village and the Norshor restoration. Many have been postponed such as the Point of Rocks development, etc. It's been over a year since any major project has been announced and not much has posted on the blogs like this one, cdinduluth or Skyscrapercity. The planning commission agenda hasn't had much lately, either. I'm wondering if the boom there will dry up in a year or two or will more stuff be announced soon? I'd love to hear more people chime in on Duluth news!

It's too bad that Duluth doesn't have any major transit projects in the pipeline. A single light rail (or even BRT) line could connect nearly all of Duluth pretty easily. Then you'd have a boom.

Temporary injunction protects Kozy from demolition
http://www.duluthnewstribune.com/news/4 ... demolition
The Pastoret Terrace and neighboring Paul Robeson Ballroom building — formerly home to the Kozy Bar and apartments — will be spared the wrecking ball. At least for now.

State District Court Judge Eric Hylden granted a request for temporary injunction Monday morning, blocking the city of Duluth from proceeding with its plans to demolish the structures, as a suit seeking to preserve the buildings awaits consideration.

The case pits the building's former owner, Dr. Eric Ringsred, and a local organization called Respect Starts Here against the city of Duluth and the Duluth Economic Development Authority.

Would be nice if the block could be saved and restored...but I suppose not likely to happen.

The New York Times has an article stating that Duluth is going to be one of the places to go as Climate change begins to grip the nation.

I debate whether it should have profiled Duluth during summer or winter.

I see they didn't mention that devastating flood in 2012, though, which happened in the summer. People focus on temperature too much and not enough on the other aspects of climate change.

Must be nice to have a downtown hospital willing to build up instead of out...

Great news for Duluth!

That looks great! Should spur plenty of other private development as well.

I recently stayed at the Park Point Marina Hotel and found myself wondering once again why there has not been more development on the Duluth harbor front. The Lakeshore hotels manage to stay busy well beyond the summer high season. The one new development on the west end of the harbor is the nicely done Pier B Resort, which made good use of one of the slips adjacent to it. There are other plots of land on the harbor that beg for more hotel/resort space or multi family residential space. The same quandary rises with the waterfront at Two Harbors. With the high multi-season tourist volume on the North Shore, it seems that a nice resort on the waterfront of a protected harbor with lake freighters coming and going could be a winner.
