Raising Cane's opening a second location where Procuts used to be in Dinkydome.
Welp, moving back to Dinkytown.

There must be plans for something else at this location in the works.

There are many buildings in Dinkytown I would love to save. This is not one. Have always thought this building was an eyesore

I'm sad about Blue Serge, mostly because my moms wedding dress was made there when she went to school here. Dinkytown Opticals and Milo's all can stay in Dinkytown. There are only 3 retail spaces left minus the massive CVS. Hair Shaft, the dude is like 80 something years old. He'll probably want to retire. Underground Press needs space to press T's, but I think most of their business could be done through E-commerce. My hope is the neighborhood doesn't stop this project like they "stopped" the CPM project.

Although it was an ugly and albeit bulking and bad design, it was also a ton of housing. If we could get a little retail row that mirrors the Dinkydale, putting the lobby at the very end, that would be wonderful. As for this site, the building isn't going anywhere.

That lone house on 13th Avenue is under different ownership. Figure they really need to acquire that property to make this pencil out.

The McDonald's is getting a redo. Not a huge project, but it will change the character of the corner.

Eh. The only redeeming quality of the current building is the slanted red roof, which is at least kind of different. Now it'll be a generic building.

Can't find any photos, but it used to be kind of fun how the split level of the McDonald's responded to the old railroad bridge that was immediately adjacent. That effect was totally lost when they rebuilt the bridges back in the early 90s.

As an aside, it's sort of astonishing how hard it is to find photos of the old railroad bridges through this area, considering how recently they were torn down. It's difficult to overstate how much the look and feel of Dinkytown changed when they were replaced.

You can get a little sense of what the McDonald's was like in this aerial photo from 1974. The open area between the building and the bridge was much more spacious and was, if memory serves, open to the underside of the bridge and the railroad tracks. It helps explain the split level design of the building, and why you have a big picture window that currently stares out at a concrete retaining wall.

Pretty sure that's the old newsstand at the intersection of University and 14th (the only freestanding one I've ever seen in the state of Minnesota).

I'm not sure I'd really qualify this as a drive-thru expansion.

I'll just keep hoping that someday the northern portion of the parking lot is sold for redevelopment... One can dream.

How recently were those old truss bridges torn down? I have no recollection of them.

I have a memory they were there up to the early 90s, while the old Dinkytown newsstand was on the bridge corner.

And they built the bridge on 5th first to handle detours. The old pedestrian bridge over the tracks near there got moved to the south side of University by Peik gym. I'd say 94-96 range

Raising Cane's now open

Crisp & Green is opening in Espresso Royale

and if you didn't hear in the Uptown thread, Bonchon (not Bon-Ton) is replacing Vescios vacant store front.

Three coffee shops still isn't enough for Dinkytown and I really really miss having something local here. Can we just tear down the TCF/Pizza Hut/Subway lot and get something new so there's more retail space options? Or fill the space next to Mesa with a cute little shop.
