Or.. a small footprint City Target focusing on groceries and student supplies. BKV says 41k sqft, most City Targets are ~80k. Seems like the proximity to TargetHQ could make this a great testing ground.

I had been wondering why Target has yet to move on campus. It seems so logical, but now it is pretty saturated with two CVS and Walgreens.

Well, looks like Target has been paying attention to our thoughts over here on UrbanMSP!

Love this experimental concept. Hope it finds eventual success.

Interesting that NY Times got the story and the local media still hasn't made a peep.

Also, frightening how correct RBY's post was.

I think it's pretty telling that Walmart, bastion of urban retail in these United States, has had ultra small format stores since 2011, beating the hip and trendy Target by quite a while.

To be sure, it's quite likely that Target pr pitched this story to the New York Times because the company wanted to promote its new store format. I doubt a NYT muckraker stumbled upon this scoop while digging around locally.

You think/hope local media picks up the news on Friday, though.

This is a brilliant idea for the expansion of Target. I can see a store like this doing well in Uptown, North Loop, Mill District, and obviously many areas of Chicago, New York, DC,.....

Hopefully this takes off and is very successful. Target needs a good boost right now.

"Boost" maybe isn't the best term though, considering they just got boosted by some cyber-thieves...

Will this Target store be instead of the initial grocery store proposal, or in addition to it?

Not for sure, but I would say they are going into the grocery space. I think that was the only space that is that large when they developed the plans.

The grocery store pulled out, but a baby Target was conceived.

Depending how that store performs I could see this being a nice model for Target going into tight urban areas and college campuses.

Agreed. This would be a great concept for Uptown, North Loop, Mill City, downtown St Paul, Grand Ave and similar places in other cities. Has potential.
