Yeah, the vacant lots next to the Olympic Cafe. Two stories, most of the rest of the block parking, including a two-story(?) ramp facing onto Penn and no active street frontage anywhere but the entrance door on Broadway.

It also includes a retail building with the potential of 3 retail bays? but a really bizarre use of land.

That separate retail building was a compromise for the developer to meet the city's desire for a restaurant/retail space next to the theater expansion. The Capri expansion will be just to east of a pocket park. There will be plenty of retail bays between existing buildings, Broadway Flats and Lupe-Rose's next phase on the southwest corner of Penn/Broadway/McNair.

I'm OK with putting something useful like this in a retail hub. The tenant looks like it's going the U's Broadway Family Medicine. They currently are in Hawthorn Crossing. Perhaps this could cause the western half of the strip mall to be redeveloped.

The garage is supposed to act as district parking for the entire business district including the Capri, Five Points and future development. I'm a bit befuddled by the continued use of surface parking surrounding the garage. Maybe this could alleviate the need for street parking and give the still possible West Broadway streetcar dedicated row in this intersection.

I've no idea where to put this, but:

When counting blocks in MPLS, are the east-west blocks considered full blocks, or the north-south ones? (for example: is the park in the lower right of that photo 2 blocks long, or 4?)

I will often use "short blocks" and "long blocks" when describing distance. For example, I might say that "it's three short blocks and one long block from my house to the restaurant".

Generally speaking, a "block" is the long side, or at least that's how I use it. 8 blocks is a mile, but 16 short blocks is a mile. I think most people use the long side, and use typical city blocks as a standard (but many are different proportions).

But be careful, since many suburbs (all of Dakota County at least) use the same numbering scheme, but where 10 blocks = 1 mile. For example, 175th to 185th Street is one mile.

Woman struck and killed Tuesday morning at Broadway and Sheridan. Too bad that won't be enough to force Hennepin County to make Broadway remotely safe.

just blocks from the recently announced First Ave amphitheater project.
Lol. 22 blocks, along West River Road, which doesn't connect through the Northern Metals site. Technically correct! The best kind of correct!

I believe it was just the classic White Castle building. The IOOF building was deemed historic.

Proposal at CoW today at 212 James Ave N: http://www.ci.minneapolis.mn.us/www/gro ... 192029.pdf

Interesting site given the block's elevation changes. Also, the residential portion is 82 units affordable, 28 market rate. 0.6 mile walk from the future Van White SWLRT stop, so there's that.

And about 0.2 miles from Phase 2 of the C Line!
