So I've been wondering... are any buildings in Stadium Village protected?

If not, which ones should be?

The building Afro Deli is moving into definitely should.

Stub and Herb's should be protected. Nothing else. (Maybe the Oak St. Cinema, but that ship sailed years ago.) Old =/= historic.

I'd like to see the three corner buildings at Washington & Oak preserved. The contrast between old and new is very pleasant, and the intersection provides important historical grounding in an area that has otherwise changed in virtually every other way possible.

Failing that, the building Afro Deli is moving into should be preserved. Stub and Herb's on its own I am indifferent to.

I'd like to save as much as possible at that corner, but could see Stub & Herb's falling if that corner could be assembled (with adjacent surface parking and unremarkable neighboring buildings). The other 2 corners seem less likely to fall due to a combination of the buildings' good condition, stable tenants, and surrounding development "boxing in" (Chipotle/Punch building would seem particularly hard to redevelop, given the small footprint).

One has to hope that the awful suburban strip mall buildings and U Liquors will meet the wrecking ball long before anyone thinks about tearing down any of the buildings at Washington & Oak.

I hope people preserve the Domino's building to historically ground future students to how much pizza I (and others) ate on Friday nights as a sophomore living in Pioneer Hall.

IDK if it should be preserved, but I personally hope the myburger building doesn't get replaced. If it does I hope they save the facade.

Afro Deli is going into Diary Queen's spot. That's great for them, and losing Dairy Queen isn't a big loss. However, there is no longer any ice cream or frozen yogurt in Stadium Village, Dinkytown or even the Central/Hennepin Area. Yogurt Lab closed sometime earlier this year and Chilly Billy's closed last year. Years ago there used to be Ben and Jerry's too, but that closed a long time ago.

Is there some reason why the U of M area can't support an ice cream store? I'm sure the weather plays a factor, but ice cream stores can obviously survive the winter in other areas of the city and there were plenty of ice cream options in the area near my midwestern college with similar weather (and less students).

I don't think they're kicking out Dairy Queen. DQ moved 2 storefronts down.

I personally don't really want to spend my money on ice cream unless it's something like Izzys, Milk Jam or something else unique. All of those brands are pretty "dull". Froyo is going out of style in general.

Can't beat a DQ Blizzard. But if just going for ice cream, I agree that those other places are much better.

Agree that it seems like campus should be able to support a Sebastian Joe's or Izzy's location. Ben and Jerry's didn't survive, true, but it seems like there had to be some other factor or factors in their closing, given the way they packed up and absconded in the dead of night.

So the space next to the Navy recruiting office used to be a little cafe called Kitty Korner Kafe or something like that. They got evicted and I see now this is a cell phone repair place. Honestly surprised it took this long for something like that to open on campus.

Aw, I loved the Kitty Korner when I was living in Dinnaken. No idea how they held on even as long as they did, though.

Agreed that cell phone repair is a no-brainer for campus, but I'm surprised it wasn't Gophermods. I see that they've even closed up their (really difficult to find) location in Como. Or SEMI, I guess, since it was just north of Hennepin.

Since the plans to build a Graduate hotel in Dinkytown were shot down, they're just buying and rebranding The Commons instead.

Not sure if we missed this, but there's a proposal on Erie St hitting CoW today for a 4-story apartment building. 48 units, 17 parking spots, 64 bike spaces. http://www.ci.minneapolis.mn.us/www/gro ... 192030.pdf

It'll be interesting to see if this winds up appreciably cheaper than other new SV buildings, with its outdoor parking.
