It was awhile ago, but didn't they go through opposition with the Carlyle? They still carried through with that project. I suspect they saw this all coming. Expectations matter here. If they didn't expect any opposition and faced some they'll be more likely to walk away. If based on experience they expected it, they're less likely to walk away.

I am just wondering if, by the time this is all cleared up...they will still be able to finance. That is more what I was talking about. Not whether they would like to move forward.

No experience with how skyscraper financing works, but I'd imagine they wouldn't be continuing to fight if they expect the financing to fall through.

This property will be premium... arguably some of the best views in the city - maybe the best.... these units will sell fast at top dollar... the cost of this legal fight is nothing compared to the profits for the building... plus they want the height to allow for maximum unit totals....

So if the bond is not posted by the set date, demolition can start, correct?

Correct. Because demolition is a separate issue from height, etc. So, tomorrow afternoon...

Just rode past on the bus. Truck, hard hats, and big CAT Machinery is onsite. Saw a few guys taking out some stain glass windows by hand. This thing is TOAST!

Is it weird that I want to detour my bike ride home across the river to see this for myself?

Do it. Because you know I positioned myself on site right at 4 PM and they were already getting the equipment out to take those windows off.

This is also a really fun look into the architecture and construction process of the time. If this was built today there would be no pitched roof. Just a flat top with stucco.

I'm pretty sure that they took about 4-5 swipes at the building to "start demolition" but have done nothing since. Just a statement to say they won and are moving forward.

That was exactly my feeling. Now no one can claim the building needs to be saved. In fact, they may be ordered to completely demolish it now to avoid it being an eyesore/hazard.

Minneapolis funeral home demolished, but 40-story condo tower still on hold
https://www.bizjournals.com/twincities/ ... story.html
*LOCKED*

The Washburn-McReavy funeral home in the East Bank neighborhood of Minneapolis has been reduced to rubble after developer Alatus LLC finally cleared one hurdle in its quest to build a 40-story condo tower on the site.

The 87-year-old funeral home at 200 Central Ave. SE. needed to come down before construction of the tower could begin. That demolition couldn’t happen during the appeals process until Friday, when the group called Neighbors for East Bank Livability wasn’t able to come up with a $4.6 million security bond by its deadline. By 4 p.m. Friday, wrecking crews were on site tearing down the building.

Article goes on to state that they don't plan on breaking ground until Spring 2018, hoping that all the legal challenges will be wrapped up by this winter.

Does Alatus have any projects actually being built currently? This tower, the one just proposed Downtown and the TCAAP are all pending. It seems like they'll like some cash flow eventually from these projects. (I'm sure they have financing and some tucked away.) It's disappointing that they're waiting until Spring of 2018, but also I'm glad that it solidifies that they're going through with this. Potentially, this tower, the US Bank tower and the General Mills tower will all have cranes up at the same time? It'll be fun to do a before and after comparison of the neighborhood density. It also makes me wonder if there should be some transit improvements. Has there ever been a circulator through Downtown and NE? Seems like having something circulate amongst all the new construction might be useful.
