Glad we've gotten this far. I was seriously worried about an 'oopsie' building collapse during foundation work.

Nye's will return!

A new, more lavish version of Nye’s Polonaise Room will open shortly before Christmas.

Nye’s Piano Bar will open in late December at 112 E. Hennepin Ave., in Suite 101, a 1,300-square-foot space in the 110-year-old building that was home to the old Nye’s polka bar. The space sits on the corner at the intersection of Hennepin and Lourdes Place.

Is this in addition to or instead of the Sonder Shaker bar/restaurant announced earlier?

The problem with being an introvert online is that no one knows you're just hanging out and listening.

I think in addition? IIRC there's a good amount of retail space.

Per the Strib article, square footage in old Nye's was 11,000, new Nye's would be only 1,300. So just a shadow of its former self. I kind of wish the owners had sold the rights to the name to some people who would better appreciate what they had.

In the end, I think this development looks pretty slick. I really like the roof lines and how the new and old retail spaces are tied together.

I like it too, except for the color of the brick on the northern addition (the darker color). It clashes pretty strongly with the color of the historic brick. The other color of brick (used along Lourdes Pl etc.) would have suited it much better.

This building does so, so much for the surrounding area at street level. I'm really glad we got this result instead of a skyscraper plopped on top of a lifeless parking podium. That being said, I do miss Nye's. We'll see how this turns out.

It won't be the same, but Nye's is coming back: http://www.startribune.com/nye-s-is-mak ... 456660643/

I posted this at SSC but I think it bears reposting here:
I hesitate to post rumors here because of all that has transpired, but I heard an interesting piece of information today about Nye's through the restaurant industry grapevine from somebody who would know. Apparently Nye's is closing because they were offered a check so big they couldn't say no, but they intend to reopen in their old buildings once they have been moved. It is likely that the story they put out was merely for public consumption.
So this turned out to be true. Nye's ownership are among the sleaziest in the industry but they played their clientele to perfection. They got extra "closing forever" business for a year. They got a new, likely much more economical space, and probably a big bump in business for their grand reopening.

And they cashed in on selling the property, I think.

That said, sounds like the new place will be shooting for something upscale. Not sure that will work for a brand that was entirely about nostalgia.

besides being of questionable means I could see an extremely modern chic version of nyes being very successful. Imagine how cool and modern feeling the original was back when it opened. Do they have that vision, and will it last as long? Not sure.

Wrapping this thread up a bit with some photos of the finished product. Both Sonder Shaker and Nye's were being patronized at midday on a Monday. Looking west, the residential portion of this project feels a bit big and overwhelming, but looking east, the variability of the buildings, through the materials and massing, is much more clear.

Bank of America is opening a branch here. That leaves one more retail space to fill.
The branch will be a virtual banking center, which means it won't have bankers. Instead there'll be an interactive learning wall, a video-conferencing room, a table featuring the bank’s latest technology and a digital greeter. The location is expected to open in the first quarter of 2020, a spokeswoman said.
