The Planning Commission CoW has details on this one - one 6 story and one 11 story building, 333 units, 24,400 sq ft retail.

And the new titleholder for worst name of the recent construction wave: WaHu. Let's hope that's a working title.

Just to indulge my obsession, I'll note that the unit density is 174 units/acre, a bit less than the 6 story proposed Washington & Walnut Flats.

This link seems to summarize Dwell (West Calhoun project) nicely:

Not much to say, other than I'm disappointed with yet another proposal.

It was part of the attachment, and I'm not sure that site has a thread yet and I THOUGHT people would want to see the proposal -- I know I would have.

I appreciate your obsession, but it should be noted that including 24,000 sf is a big deal -- this is more than just a token coffee shop. This is bigger than the downtown Lund's.

Aren't there plans for a grocery store there? Or am I just confusing it with this colossally stupid development competition: http://www.bizjournals.com/twincities/b ... r&page=all

Stupid? I can't think of anything more FUN and "hands-on" than being apart of this competition. If I ever decide to get a Masters in Real Estate I will seriously consider Wisconsin or Minnesota if it means I can be involved in a class project like THAT! It's basically Sim City with a real city and a real project -- so cool, and any future developer/city planner's wet dream!!

I like the competition, but not the results. This is what I posted when I posted it on my Facebook page back when I found it:
Hey look, all the entries in this competiton were really stupid! Let's put a Walgreens literally two blocks from a CVS! Hey, you know what campus needs? A fucking Apple store and a yoga apparel retailer (really? Fucking really? Why so specific?) And everybody wants to put hotel spaces there... why?
Excuse the swears, I was obviously not a fan...

Not sure about a hotel or upscale apartments. But a grocery store is needed for the U. And I actually think an Apple store would kill in this location or somewhere in Dinkytown. You have 50,000 students concentrated in this little area, and I bet 90% of them have some sort of Apple product. And it is those college kids who are always the first ones to spend money on new technology.

The actually is an Apple Store (or something close to it) in the College Bookstore in Coffman Union. I'm not sure if it is an official Apple Store but they certainly sell a lot of Apple products.

I didn't go to the U of M, but if it's anything similar there would be basically no demand for an Apple store because you can buy the same stuff at the university bookstore, usually for a discount, and for most people on their parent's charge.

Yep. The bookstore doesn't have the Apple Store branding, but it does sell and repair (or at least send in for repair) Apple products. A separate Apple Store in the university area wouldn't make much sense.

Does anyone know how FirstTech has been holding out since Apple moved in? I've always thought it was a lowblow moving in on the oldest Apple reseller in the world.

Apple contracts them to do onsite repairs (which you have to beg Apple to do) so they get from scratch from that. I bet they also do fairly well in the second hand market, since they sell a lot of used stuff, and maybe do repairs that Apple wouldn't sanction.

So they posted the site plans for this finally.

I'm not quite sure what to make of it. It's certainly different than what I had in my minds eye. I'll hold off on passing judgement until better (real) renderings are released. The name, however, has got to go.

Huh look at that. That's different from what I was thinking, too. For this guy, I kinda hope they do the individual units in a way that doesn't preclude non-students from living there. It'll be close to the light rail stations and so I could see young adults enjoying the location. At this point we've got to be getting close to the point where all the kids from the Southwest suburbs are in the new buildings...joking a little bit, but eventually there's an upper limit to the amount of college sophomores who can pay $1200 a month for a one bedroom.
