Old Minneapolis General Hospital

Postby martykoessel » September 6th, 2013, 3:26 pm

There's a fence up around the building at 5th and Portland that housed the Hennepin County Medical Center's hyperbaric chamber before a new one was completed last year in the current hospital. The building, dating from 1958, is architecturally inconsequential, but the fact that it's about to come down is nonetheless of historical note. It's the last remnant of the old Minneapolis General Hospital complex, which used to occupy the entire block.

The building now on its last legs is at the front, labeled Research Labs.

Does anybody else remember the big, old hulk that was the General Hospital? I did some volunteer work there when I was a high school student back in '73 or '74, not long before the hospital was demolished. It was a bleak yet fascinating place.
