POLL: What should we call the City Council?

Postby Nick » February 27th, 2014, 8:46 pm

I usually say City Councilmember but that has like 14 syllables in it. I want to say City Councilor but I don't feel like enough people say that for me to not sound like I'm saying "alderman" or something when I say it.

I like Councilor. However, I would have voted for just "CM" if that had been an option.

Their official title is councilmenber (CM) because Minneapolis was ahead of the curve on de-gendering things. It's kind of a mouth full but it's the correct and an appropriate title. So it's not really up for polling, that's the title.

You can leave off "city". Councilmember gets the point across without losing any meaning. On the forum, I think CM has been used widely enough that people should get it

Maybe it's the demographic of my neighborhood but people keep saying "oh you're the one who ran for alderman" when I meet them or they introduce me.

Did we use alderman at some point? It's much easier. Alderman, alderwoman.

Looks like MPR's Curtis Gilbert agrees with Nick. They must've received your donation.

While in Duluth this weekend, I saw yellow lawn signs everywhere stating "Recall Councilor Gardner". So even in our own state, Councilor (note single "l") seems to be an accepted term. Not sure why it hasn't caught on in Minneapolis. It's never too late to begin the revolution.

P.S. I can't wait to Google who the heck this Gardner guy is and what he did to inspire a recall campaign. As we drove out to Park Point, the signs were in a clear majority of front yards.

I'm pretty sure I saw your pizza train pulling into the station as I drove into Duluth on Friday afternoon #twitterstalking

Pretty sure I knew someone else who was on Matt's pizza train this weekend, but he probably doesn't know them. #twittermissedconnections

Also to further this derail, I was at the Depot museum on Saturday and someone was having their wedding there, and part of it involved the whole wedding party on the excursion train, probably the ceremony, though I'm not sure how the logistics of that work out exactly.

Actually, Gardner is a woman. From what little I've read on the issue (and without proper access to the articles anymore), area residents really, really, really hate a S-curve in the road on Park Point where Lake Avenue transitions to Minnesota Avenue. Cars tend to fly around the curve and there's a playground and beach access and such there.

Essentially, Gardner supported a small area plan that will apparently take pressure off development, but didn't propose eliminating/moving the S-curve. Seems a bit like a strange problem to me, especially since stifling development on the point will almost certainly boost land values due to lack of new supply.

Here's the only unlocked article I could find to share: http://www.wdio.com/article/stories/s3490266.shtml
