Free Idea: disperse affordable housing (integration), while also increasing transit investment and urban density, everywhere in the metro.

I suspect (and I've never found any good evidence to actually back this up, so grain of salt and all) that the issue is that Minnesota lacks a robust black middle to upper class, and this sort of becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy. If you're a black kid from a poor neighborhood that overcomes the odds, you're going to accept a scholarship to a nice east coast college and then when you graduate, you're not going to move back to Minneapolis, because there's nobody like you there. So, instead, you move to a Sunbelt city with a thriving black culture. And the cycle continues.
This, except they don't even have to leave MN for college (or be from a poor neighborhood), the only black woman in several of my college classes moved to ATL as soon as she had a year of experience in her field.

You don't have to sign up, just click the barely visible X in the upper right hand corner of that stupid popup box.

I don't see how you can argue that Bottineau "skirts" north. It goes right through it. Yes, I preferred a Broadway route but it's not like it's completely bypassing the place. There's a lot of density along Olson.

And I dunno, we've argued this too much on here already, but in my mind, a SWLRT that "skirts" North is better than one that doesn't go there at all, especially given Midtown LRT. But many disagree and that's ok.

West Elm is launching a line of boutique hotels. One is set to open in Minneapolis by 2018.
Room rates will start around $175 and exceed $400 for luxury suites, though they will vary by location. The hotels will have 100 to 250 rooms each. Three other locations are slated for Charlotte, Indianapolis and Minneapolis. West Elm and DDK will share the management and marketing fees. Mr. Brett said West Elm could eventually have as many hotels as retail stores.

(Didn't really know where to put this since there's no location, but it shows that we are a target market)

Cool. Maybe they'll build a 60-story tower on the corner of Hennepin and 5th?

Roughly 4 rooms a floor? Sounds like a possibility!

But in reality, a nice 4-6 story infill or re-purpose in North Loop is where my money is. A nice showroom at the base as well.

You are awfully confident that it won't be in Edina ;)

I'm scared it's going to be St. Louis Park or Edina so I'm trying to just push that aside and maybe it will eventually go away.

This could also be a great fit in the vacant Calhoun square lot.

But north loop would be really cool too!

Institutional discrimination is something many cities are loath to discuss, so the council’s focus on the issue is refreshing, considering that the local agency is made up of state-appointed regional planners and makes decisions on how to spend some of the state’s money. The council’s lead researcher, Libby Starling, says the focus on racial disparities has a lot do with ensuring the economic vitality of the region in years to come. Currently, people of color make up about a quarter of the population of the Twin Cities metro area, and the council expects that percentage to grow to 40 percent by 2040. “There’s an economic impact,” says Starling, the manager of regional policy and research for the council. “How many more people will live in poverty, or fewer homeowners will there be, if we don’t focus on eliminating the disparities?”
