Apparently there is a new satellite view available, but only on certain devices and in certain locations. I can get new satellite pictures of the Twin Cities on my tablet, but not on my Google Chromebox. Anyone else having trouble?

I think it is fairly common for imagery updates to roll out over a couple days to various platforms. According to the desktop version of Google Earth, the imagery is from April 5th of this year.

I believe google maps now defaults to the 3D view which is more outdated. If you toggle 3D off, you will see a more recent image. For example, US Bank Stadium is completed in the 2D view.
Huh. I get the same images in 2D and 3D, and none of US Bank, the Wells Fargo Towers and related developments, the Commons or 4Marq are there in the satellite/aerial images.

Sort of relatedly, I saw the streetview car at 1st Ave and 6th today.

In the upper left corner, click on "menu" (three lines). Then click "3D on", which will toggle it off. The 2D imagery is from this spring.

Huh. And here I thought clicking the "3D" button on the lower right would toggle it on and off. Thanks.

I know this is a thread titled Google Maps, but I’m going to hijack it with news about all internet mapping services... so ... I noticed Apple Maps has updated its 2D imagery to as recent as a couple months ago.

Looking around Saint Louis Park and Hopkins I’m seeing The Moline show, with the 8th Ave and 2nd St. work underway. West End’s Central Park West apartments going, the new apartments at the west edge of Excelsior and Grand nearly done. The Shoreham looks completed.

I keep expecting that they're going to put up new 3D imagery before the Super Bowl. Makes Google look bad to have the stadium still showing up as a hole in the ground.

I click on the link above and stumbled onto Nicollet Mall before the redo and found it somewhat stunning to see the contrast between then and now. I must saw I'm partial to the way it was before after seeing all the trees, flowers and colored pavers.

The old pavers, to the extent they weren't broken and a non-trivial number were, definitely looked better. They were pretty treacherous when wet or snowy, though.

Does anyone else think that it is embarrassing that Google Earth/Maps does not include a completed 3D version of US Bank Stadium? We have the Super Bowl bringing the eyes of the world towards Minneapolis for a brief moment and we're stuck with a 3D image of the stadium under construction circa 2014. It would make good business sense for Google to show off the in-browser version of 3D Maps during a huge event like that by having somewhat up-to-date imagery of the facility the event is being held within.

It's not embarrassing to me. Maybe to Google. Or the NFL for clearly either not having foresight to ask for an update or not having omnipotent power over Google. But it's not like I really care if people can see the stadium on Maps or not.

I'm not sure when it actually happened, but Google's 3D map has now been updated.

CORRECTION: The new imagery now shows the new stadium, but still seems to be fairly out of date. The Kraus-Anderson block shows the old building and associated parking lots.

As far as I can tell, downtown is mostly (but not entirely) updated to mid-late 2016. It's hard to remember if buildings are missing or if they hadn't broken ground by the time the photography was done. For example, Mill City Quarter is finished, but Maverick is still a parking lot. There's also something strange going on with the street textures--check out various intersections on downtown Hennepin or Washington/N 1st to see what I mean.

Some suburbs seems to have updated as well... the Vikings training facility now appears for example. Appears to be early summer 2017.

Summer 2017 feels right, but The Maverick Apartments were definitely under construction then, so it seems like Hennepin Avenue must be a dividing line for old vs. new imagery.

Definitely not all updated yet. T3 is still just a parking lot. Over in St Paul, the old jail is still standing next to the river.

Google’s 2D aerial imagery for a swath of Downtown Minneapolis has also been updated. It may be based on the 3D imagery that was loaded. It is higher resolution than the rest of the metro area imagery, but the stitching gets a bit wonky at the edges. Google Earth says it is from June 1st 2017, so only about 2 months more recent than before. It was taken during the Downtown light rail shutdown, you can clearly make out the construction activities related to that, as well as the buses staged for replacement service.

The old on/off toggle for 3D vs. top-down 2D aerial views (accessed via the top-left menu, not to be confused with the "3D" option in the lower-right navigation thingy) has been changed so it is now called "Globe". It's good that there aren't two different "3D" toggles anymore, but I find the "Globe" naming to be a bit non-obvious. I just noticed the change today.

Also, whatever algorithm they're currently using to choose the detail level on 2D imagery seems a bit broken. It's almost always blurry unless you get exactly the right zoom level, though I've been having that problem for weeks/months now...

Edit: I should have listened to my inner voice telling me to check, as this new Globe mode also makes the plain map view appear as a globe if you zoom out, rather than using a Mercator projection: https://www.theverge.com/2018/8/5/17653 ... -isnt-flat
