I think the preferred site is in Prospect Park.

Though I wish they would either take this opportunity to cap 35W and put it there, or pick some other spot that isn't going to redevelop naturally.

I didn't necessarily like that as the site, but it was better than introducing the world to Minneapolis with 494, the airport, and American Boulevard...

Just curious where you heard/read that from, I randomly spoke with someone who works for Greater MSP and he seemed to imply that Prospect Park was the site. Could be wrong...

I'm not really certain I can say. It's people who were very close to the Prospect Park proposal.

If they want a temporary fairgrounds where nothing permanent and urban will be built, then Bloomington is a great choice. But that does sort of shatter my pipe dream that they'd try something interesting and build an urban fair campus.

Still hope they'd use the opportunity to strengthen the fabric of the area around the light rail there. Also an opportunity to promote the Minnesota river and the few trails that run along it.

I'll take you at your word since you are in fact a real person with a non-bot twitter account etc. :D

It'll be interesting to see how this all plays out! Thanks for the info.

This is the first I've heard that it might be Expo 2022. Huh.

Interesting, that could result in somewhat reduced gridlock from international visitors if it were to be held so close to the airport.

If the expo 2023 website is any indicator, it appears Minnesota has been decided as the winner:

Star Tribune says Argentina was selected.

Edit: The stream said Argentina, but the full story now says only that MN is out.

Considering people's general reaction to the Super Bowl logistics, perhaps it's best if we don't host a major world event for a few years anyway :)

This idea is very much alive for 2027. This summer the Biden admin submitted a formal proposal for Minnesota to host the 2027 specialized expo. The expectation is still that it would be held in Bloomington’s South Loop area. Former SoS Mark Ritchie is still leading Minnesota’s bid. The only known competing bid is by Málaga, Spain, with roughly 3 months until the submittal deadline.

Seems logistically we're a better fit given that we've shown we can handle large events, I may be mistaken however. We have a good number of hotels. Also their airport has 12million, we had nearly 40million in 2019. If somehow they wanted to use other venues we have two convention centers, too many stadiums..and the fairgrounds.

They have some higher numbers on their expo site. But compare our Downtown to their district with 20,000 employees.

"About Málaga
Malaga (573,832 inhabitants, 2018 municipal register) is the sixth largest Spanish city and the economic and technological capital of the Andalusian autonomous region and therefore, of southern Spain. Its excellent weather conditions (295 days of sunshine per year and average temperature of 18.2 degrees Celsius) and its strategic location in the Mediterranean Sea as a gateway to the European continent make it a city traditionally associated with the tourism sector.

However, this reality has evolved in recent decades as different institutions led by the City Council have worked together to place Malaga on the map of international investments, attracting and retaining talented people while promoting technological and cultural projects that have diversified Malaga’s economy.

The Malaga international airport registered more than 19.8 million passengers last year. In addition, 2.5 million travellers came by the high-speed AVE train, which arrived to Malaga in 2007 and connected Malaga to Madrid in just two and a half hours travel time. An important network of highways and roads complete the land connections to other cities.

The port, meanwhile, received a total of 477,001 cruise passengers in 2019, thereby maintaining the figures reached in the previous periods. With regards to freight traffic, 3.5 million tons moved through our port last year.

The City of Malaga is home to the Andalusian Technological Park with 636 companies, 20,000 workers and a combined annual revenue that exceeds 2 billion euros. It is a true space for knowledge generation, employment and investments. Its current expansion plans to address, among others, projects such as the construction of co-living spaces and a new hotel for employees of the technopolis"

so what happens to this site in Fall 2027?
I wish they could spend the money updating The State Fair site. There could be dedicated buses to/from the airport, hotels, and both downtowns.

NYT has an article about Rome’s bid for the 2030 World’s Fair, which led me to looking up the one we’re bidding for here. Turns out the vote is in two days. So there’s that.

Fingers crossed, it would be great for that area of Bloomington and draw in alot of money for the metro area!
