A blow against one of the common incentives for overly aggressive police enforcement.

This should be looked at as a great step.

A local angle, police union membership continues to earn special privileges to members.

It's good to be a member! Could maybe add that to the recruitment video?

It's been a bit gratifying to see that some NYPD members have pushed back against the rhetoric of their police union's boss, who had said the city's mayor had "blood on his hands" after those two officers were killed in an ambush on December 20th. On the other hand, the union members and leaders got to the point of shoving each other around, and still seem to seek about as much power as they can get:
"This is what my members want!" one officer reportedly shouted. "They want more cars, better vests, more manpower! They don't want an apology."
A whole strange political world unto itself...

This American Life's two most recent episodes were titled "Cops See It Differently" and tried to thread the needle to find a better understanding of the relation between police and the communities they serve -- what's good, what's bad, and what has and hasn't worked for places that have tried to change.

This is just the affirmation of state law. The union is not "earning" any special privileges for its members; they are simply ensuring that state law is properly enforced. Here's the relevant statue number: 624.714 Sub. 17

Strictly speaking, "No person, in any public or private place, shall lurk, lie in wait or be concealed with intent to commit any crime or unlawful act."

Interesting quote, "after 16 years there needs to be some new blood"... Kroll has been the VP for 9 years, how is that new blood??

They elected Kroll. If there's a police shooting in this city, you know his backstory is going to be in every article.
