Edit: Oh my gosh somebody please dismantle the ESG monopoly before I graduate.
This is a funny comment.

Thank you for your contribution to these forums (fora?) with photos and comments. You are WAY more engaged with urbanism in this town than I was in school and that should be commended.

With that said, multi-family housing is a difficult thing to assess architecturally - what are the architect's decisions? what represents the developer "VE" process? what compromises were made for the city/neighborhood/interest groups?

You really have to understand the economics of multi-family housing to understand why these buildings look the way that they do. Architects are trying to hit a "target" in the market that the developer has predetermined so there is no point in deviating from these criteria - you will be fired and they will just move on to someone who can execute the design that meets their pro forma (which is based on market conditions).

I'm not saying it is *impossible* to achieve something great in multi-family housing in the US but it really does require a developer who wants to do something special, a city entitlement process that is healthy and a great architect.

Grant, look into working for Julie Snow or James Dayton if you want a job where you can think outside the box.

/ get clients who are willing to do something special.

*Disclaimer: James Dayton has done one built MFH project (Bookmen Stacks/Lofts) which is a condo and I'd put ESGs 301 Kenwood up against that project any day of the week.

"The box" (in MFH) is the developer. If someone brings you a pro forma, and says "hit this target" and you "think outside" the box by diminishing their rentable square footage, you'll get admonished and if you continue, you'll get fired. Snow-Kreilich is a great firm but there is no way that they do a double-height commercial space (cutting rentable SF in half) and create double-height outdoor public space at the ground level at Brunsfield without the blessing/support of the developer (not local BTW). I've been in many a meeting where the design lead proposed a double-height lobby in a residential entry and it got denied by the developer.

If you ask the AIA, there are 3 great firms in town:

VJAA
Snow-Kreilich
HGA

If you can get a job at any of those, you should. If not, don't think that your life is over because you'll never be able to think "outside of the box."

I don't 100% agree with the views of the AIA, but agree those are some of the best firms in town. I'm joining AIAS and still making connections with smaller firms.

Of course, the AIA (as a professional organization representing all of the firms in the state) would never tell you that there are only three great firms in town. It's true that these firms do snag most of the Honor Awards, but those are actually selected by invited out-of-state jurors and tend to favor a very particular type of design project.

The truth is that there are a lot of really great firms in town doing very high-quality design, and you could learn an awful lot from most any of them.

So apparently BIG (Bjarke Ingles Group) is designing the new tower where the Spire was supposed to go. Some people think they're taky others love them. What do you guys think.

They're just plain amazing. In their website they give the logical reasoning behind the shape and concept of every project. It's all about a marriage of form and function. They've newly completed an amazing building in nyc.

Does anyone want to take a shot at being an architect with Foster & Partners in London?

EDIT: Whoops...somehow this article came across in my Strib app as being new.

"China bans 'bizarre' architecture":

Maybe some of the firms designing these 'bizarre' buildings now need gigs here in the midwest!

Okay, I think I got them all. For the past week I've been working on a big list of every single (I think) architecture firm in Minneapolis alone. The AIA has a list that has some errors on it. Including firms that aren't in Minneapolis and firms that don't exist anymore. Keep in mind, this list is only for firms that have a website. If a firm doesn't have a website by 2016, I don't really consider it very legitimate.

Profile of MRS Design and a bit about their relocation away from the riverfront to next to the Nicollet Ave Station where commercial space is much more affordable.
