Ditto this: I really don't buy the "we pitched too many sites" critique though, or understand why it comes up so often

Amazon’s feedback for knocking the Twin Cities of the finalists...

Recruiting new talent in a market with very low unemployment and maybe too many other large successful vibrant employers to compete for employees.

Yeah. I’m not too impressed with the critique either lol. It’s totally ok if Amazon doesn’t want to move here, but that reason seems pretty thin.

Yeah, that doesn't do anything to convince me that it doesn't actually come down to the amount of tax breaks on offer. As we've seen in other news this week, Bezos/Amazon definitely shares the classic 1%er irrationally tax-averse attitude, and, while I can believe that it might be harder to recruit their desired techy workforce here than, say, Denver, I don't believe that it would be easier in Nashville.

Twin Cities “economic development experts” talk about the Amazon HQ 1.5 selection game.

There certainly are a lot of angles. There’s a lot of finger pointing. It might just be the circles I’m in but so much of the finger pointing is at this or that politician, party, or activists. Or at Amazon for insisting on the wealth transfer to them. It seems like Amazon deserves a lot of blame just for the self-inflicted public relations mess, how did a firm with such access to data misread the situation so badly.

I’m disappointed the scale and outcome of the Amazon beauty contest/data scam hasn’t gotten legislative activity, in Minnesota at a minimum, to not just reduce but outright ban the race to the bottom tax giveaways to relocate jobs.

I'm still in for Cheyenne Wyoming. The state is so small, 100,000 new citizens from the tech could probably flip it blue

Hubris, mostly. But also, they're dealing with a different political situation than they were a year and a half ago.

How so? Same mayor, same governor, both of whom were Amazon subsidy supporters and got reelected in that timeframe (both Cuomo and BDB were reelected in landslides).

I mean, AOC is like the perfect scapegoat straight out of central casting, but really what impact did her words/tweets have on this? She's a Congressperson...and (as far as I know) has no actual role in giving/retracting state & local subsidies. Many locals in Queens were against this from the moment it was announced in November, and I kinda fail to see how social media pot stirring from AOC (or others) had much impact on Amazon's decision. Or am I missing a whole part of the story in this poorly-informed summary? Did NYC or NY State formally retract or cast doubt on previously promised subsidies? Or did Amazon just get cold feet?

Yep PACB killed it. It’s not like Amazon isn’t going to expand in New York. Amazon absolutely wants to attract workers that would only live in New York. They just won’t get $500 million in state subsidy.

Yeah, the Ritholz link is a very good description of why it happened. Hubris and politics. I'd say the PACB was more of a symptom than the cause.

Greater MSP will release the details of their offer to Amazon tomorrow, May 6.

Amazon contacted Greater MSP and released them from their confidentiality agreement.

Some of those proposed sites didn't make much sense and seemed to actively go against what Amazon was looking for. Elko? Come on.

That said, in hindsight, it's not like we lost out on anything.

If I'm remembering correctly, they kinda let any city that was interested put their name down. Wouldn't want to hurt Ramsey's feelings, ya know?

We would have happily extended the Orange Line all they way down there, though.

Well, why not, given the circumstances. It was very much a "Fine, here's the proposal, whatever" type of response.
