Better use of urban public lands

Barron’s had an article that governments own possibly $50 Trillion of real estate assets.

It’s not arguing to sell off public parks, but some public lands are terribly unwisely used and could be better used. It mentions the US Army Presidio base. It was sold but a trust found commercial and residential tenants whose payments fund the rest of the public park.

The Twin Cities has the TCAAP which may be the most significant local example.

The story also mentions the Hong Kong Mass Transit Rail Corp covers costs by developing around rail stations.

While that story is paywalled, here is an unlocked version in Apple News. https://apple.news/AyOJwXPpzT7q0BxS_k640RQ

Isn’t that how many streetcar systems were financed? The companies owned land in the hinterlands that their newer streetcar lines were aligned with.

But let’s not take this too far. We want to keep some diversity in land uses, otherwise we get dullness.
