This type of thing is what keeps the suburban hate fires burning. Pretty disgusting videos.

Ya! Scare tactics to force the council to spend more on cops!

Ya! Scare tactics to force the council to spend more on cops!
It is obviously needed.

It is?

Violent crime is going down, horrific one-off events nonwithstanding.

It may be going down, but I still hear gunshots in my neighborhood and on my bike commute to work I pass the location of two gang murders from this year.

If we want to fight crime, then we need to fight the causes of crime: poverty and segregation. Having more police officers doesn't address either of those.

It is possible to address those things while also investing in policing in a responsible way. People do deserve safe neighborhoods.

It's hard to view opinions on city affairs from professional sports teams as anything but private organizations demanding more public funds to protect their investments.

"It's too dangerous for people to come watch our gladatorial bloodsport" is not a terribly compelling argument.

Well, these are the same people who are very good at convincing our city leaders to use taxes to help pay for their stadiums.
Maybe they will work their magic with this one.

That's clearly what they're trying to do, but I don't see that as a net positive. If the billionaire owners of professional sports teams are concerned about the safety near the buildings we bought them, they're welcome to write a check to the city.

EXPERTS SAY THERE IS LITTLE EVIDENCE THAT MORE COPS EQUALS LESS CRIME

https://www.usatoday.com/story/news/inv ... 818056002/

"Data shows that the raw numbers of police have declined over the past five years, and the rate of police officers per 1,000 residents has been dropping for two decades. At the same time, the violent crime rate has also dropped."
...
“Most police departments have issues, not with the number of officers, it’s with how they are deployed and scheduled,” said Alexander Weiss, a police staffing consultant whose clients have included police departments in Chicago, Albuquerque and New Orleans. “It’s more important what the officers do, versus how many of them there are.”

...

"James McCabe, a retired New York Police Department official who travels the country as a police staffing consultant, says there is little clear connection between staffing numbers and crime. “New York City made the conscious decision to reduce the number of cops,” he noted in an interview. “And crime continued to go down. It’s not what you have, it’s what you are doing with them.”"

I just had my closest brush with death, ever. I was crossing Hennepin/Lyndale Ave at Groveland Terrace. The Hennepin Ave light turned red and then the pedestrian crosswalk illuminated and I began crossing the street. To my left a southbound vehicle going apprx 40mph starts honking its horn at me and makes no attempt to stop or slow down. I sprint out of the way (in front of stationary cars) and come out unscathed. The car blew through the red light and was gone. I call 911 and get more or less lip service that they'll put officers on notice of the white Land Rover Evoque that nearly killed me. I couldn't come close to getting plates due to how fast all this happened.

Other than calling 911, is there any further recourse I have? This is probably one of the busiest intersections in the city. I'd imagine they have cameras...

When does something like this go from a regular shooting, to a terror incident? This event doesn't match normal gun violence which usually is usually 1) Gang members targeting someone outside a home or car with one or two victim. 2) Related to disputes Downtown when the bars get our or etc. 3) Domestic/other grievances between parties.

The shooting in Charlotte also seems to be a somewhat similar although on a greater scale. (100 shots and car into a crowd.) Obviously we'll know more when the police have a suspect and start determining a motive. But if it was a shooting to scare people, versus a gang shooting or etc I think affects how our community heals and moves forward from such tragedies.

This was almost certainly a gang shooting. The reason I say that is because KG Wilson and the MAD Dads were on scene when it happened. They have their ear to the ground on the north side and I believe they had information leading them to believe this was a possibility that night. I'm pretty sure it was retaliation from the shootout a week earlier at the Broadway Pub and Grille and the shootings yesterday were retaliation for the incident in uptown.

It's easy for other parts of the city to ignore the violence in North Minneapolis. There has been escalating tension between the north side gangs lately and it's spilling out to other areas.

Some 14 year old just tried to shoot a rival gang member on my block as I was mowing the yard and talking to kids giving out bracelets with scripture. I rushed the kids into my house and when things were clear escorted them home. The officer who came casually drove up, talked to me and a neighbor only really wanted to know what car the kid got into and where the shots were fired. He grabbed the casings and left like 15 minutes later. He didn't get my name or reach out to the other neighbors who saw anything. He honestly, seemed tired of it and was going through the motions. Maybe MPD is doing more in the background, but things have been steadily building over the past several months. The neighbors see and hear things, but we're pretty much left in the dark about what is going on or how we could help.

We've had MPD block off every block for 6 blocks trying to catch someone, a drug bust, a high speed police chase with suspect throwing weapons out the car and crashing in my neighbors yard, then my neighbor saw someone pull a gun and shoot down the street. Which woke up my wife who looked up and saw someone pull a weapon to return fire, but when she turned the lights on they fled. Then today someone tried firing from almost the same place. All in 3 months or so within a block of our house.

Pretty much all my neighbors are the nicest people, the neighborhood kids of different races bike and play together and we're 6 blocks from the Grand Rounds. I feel decently safe running at night and walking our dog around.

Which is the weird things about it. As I was rushing the kids in, this dude could have shot me, but I didn't think he would. I wasn't the target. He walked right past me mowing and let me see him and didn't care.

I guess you can scratch Uptown off the list of "places suburbanites think are safe to visit".

This is getting ridiculous, and I don't really see any discussion about it here...the city has got to get a handle on this....I almost put this in the national reputation thread, because it is becoming one among people I talk to out here in the bay area where I live. 2 car jackings per day!? And nobody here better tell me rising crime is a perception thing...stats are way up. It makes me so sad...and if they don't figure it out relatively quickly, it is going to have some real consequences :(

Talking to my sister that lives in the apartment near 34th and Henn where I lived 15 years...its not going well in the neighborhood.

I mean look at the post above me. The lady in this article was carjacked and robbed in broad daylight near 50th and France! It isn't just suburbanites thinking it's not safe anymore. It isn't safe. I am so worried for the city. Other cities are struggling with the issue as well, but what is happening in Minneapolis has me more concerned than most of those others.
