Honolulu's rail project is getting expensive, and people are angsty.

Anyone who wants to see a seven-lane parking lot freeway, scroll about halfway down.

I've been to Hawaii a couple of times, the most recent being eight years ago, and traffic was bad then. I can only imagine what it is like now. They do have a decent bus system that covers most of the island, from what I remember, but they need more than that, at least in Honolulu itself. Being a mountainous island and all, there's only so much land they can build on, nor is there any room to put more highways.

Now it’s $8.3 billion.

Was there not a cheaper way for dedicated rail? S-Bahn type service?

I visited Hawaii over spring break and it looks to ready to open by the airport. To hear it’s another few years is crazy.

Anecdotally the traffic wasn’t bad. We were on the freeway at midday so maybe only rush hour is gridlock.

Yeah, I visited in October 2022, and was really bummed it wasn't open yet, though got plenty of photos and videos of them testing the trains!

The first segment proposed operating hours are:

Weekdays: 5am - 7pm
Weekends: 8am - 7pm

That is definitely a choice....

It's an automated system! There's no reason the frequency should only be 10 minutes and those operating hours are that short. Literally the only additional operating costs would be purchasing and maintaining more vehicles. If they were gonna run service like this they should have just built a light rail and saved enough money for likely a second line.

Opening on June 30th! Has officially been branded as Skyline Honolulu. They are still trying to negotiate later running hours.
