Savannah

Postby mickey » March 25th, 2018, 4:01 pm

The weather's got me dreaming about moving to somewhere warm, partially because I want to live my life 'in the street' with street life (like the Spanish / Italians) instead of being holed up indoors. Savannah looks like its got a nice street grid and some good urbanism (and a lot of pretty buildings). Any comments on Savannah in general and/or its urbanism?

The best parts of Savannah are very expensive to live in.

Savannah’s grid is discussed in the book “Street Design: The Secret to Great Cities and Towns“ by Dover & Massengale.

Oh, that’s a great book. Well, I loved the first half of the book, but it lost it’s magic before the ending.

My parents live in Savannah so I visit it from time to time. It has a romance to it that Minneapolis is too uptight and compulsive to pull off. It is one of the most beautiful cities in North America, but the summers are fierce. You will never complain about humidity in Minneapolis again after a July down there. I did a photo tour of it several years ago that I posted in another forum:

Great photos! That old Ford in the first photo kinda sets off the feeling for the photo essay. Those first few streets (alleys?) need some street trees—looks like a harsh environment.

Do you know the story behind the building in photo #78? Seems… unfinished. What’s adjacent to it?

Old Southern cities have a beautiful charm with their open balconies. And Savannah is 130 years older than Mpls, with the central area planned from early days with a regular street grid & parklets. A walkable city, developed way before cars, and it shows.
