Re: Downtown Minneapolis General Topics & Development Map
A friend just sent me a pic of the IDS. It looks like there are 2 windows missing from near the top (maybe 5-6 floors down). Anyone have an idea of what that could be for?
Re: Downtown Minneapolis General Topics & Development Map
I saw that from the intestate the other day, it almost looks like they're slowly replacing glass? I noticed rectangular sections that looked shinier, but it could have been the sun.

I was wondering how often the glass is replaced on IDS. I was reading about transparent solar technology and thought if the windows were replaced with regular frequency, it wouldn't be difficult to turn the IDS into one big solar panel one day.

It's a bit of a ret-con, but I like thinking of the North Loop being an ironic name considering the neighborhood would have ripped up to build I-335, the 'north loop' of the Minneapolis downtown freeway. From what I understand, the "loop" consisted of the Gateway and what is now known as North Loop. I've seen references to the Gateway where it was called "Lower Loop" in the past, so NL built off on that naming convention. Downtown East and Elliot Park aren't part of that historic "loop" then, whatever it was.

I didn't say it was the real reason, I just enjoy thinking of that as part of the history of the neighborhood.

Re: Downtown Minneapolis General Topics & Development Map
Can we build something like this somewhere (near) downtown?
Possible locations:
Hall Island
Boom Island
Father Hennepin Park
Adjacent to Southeast Steam Plant (once it's retired)
Minnegasco Site next to Gold Medal Park

That would look awesome at Boom Island with downtown as the background.

Hall Island. That place needs some help and momentum.

I guess they are going to recreate the island. I thought the DNR said "no f***ing way".

It's now attached to the mainland. But they're trying to re-create the island.
Wouldn't be able to have the venue there though. The plans are for a long, narrow strip of land that's mostly meant as a wildlife sanctuary with some boardwalks.

I like nature and I hate amphitheaters. It's now attached to the mainland. But they're trying to re-create the island.

Re: Downtown Minneapolis General Topics & Development Map
There is some info over in the Minneapolis Parks thread in Minneapolis General.
Re: Downtown Minneapolis General Topics & Development Map
Yes, do go over to the other thread and look at the plans.
For purposes of this thread, it's probably enough to note that the recreated island would only be a sliver of what is overall a very large site, and there's probably enough room for both to co-exist.
