Bicycle Infrastructure
Re: Bicycle Infrastructure
I don't understand why they've gone with a merging zone at 7th/2nd, since there's clearly plenty of room for separate lanes. Even a protected lane, if they wanted it--this area is on the protected bikeway plan.

I had no idea this was being considered: http://www.startribune.com/advisory-pan ... 365174011/
Two way paths would sure be useful for utilitarian transport. I wonder how many folks on the panel ride a bike outside of recreation.

I guess that's fine, as long as they apply this principal to the parkways being used by car commuters (which it generally seems they do).The proposal also was described as more commuter friendly, but members of the advisory committee argued that the bike paths should instead be oriented toward recreational use

Re: Bicycle Infrastructure
Lots of Northside advocates up in arms about this, wondering what the hell he's been looking at for the past year.At this point, the greenway isn't a done deal. It might be shaping into something that might work, but so far there hasn't been a good job of engaging those who actually live there and finding out what they think.

On the front page of the site in bold blue there are links to a "2012 Fall Community Engagement Report", a "2013 Winter Community Engagement Report", a "2014 Community Engagement Report", and an upcoming "2015 Community Engagement Report". Perhaps the website is sugar-coating it, but I'm actually struck by how strong the engagement effort looks to be. I suggest going to your city website Blong...

Re: Bicycle Infrastructure
Saw on the DMNA Land Use agenda that there's a plan for a protected bike way along 11th Ave, from West River to 6th St.
Re: Bicycle Infrastructure
Cool, I guess. Not a very stressful street as it is, but better is better.
Re: Bicycle Infrastructure
For sure. Hopefully it improves the weird jog that the Hiawatha trail takes when it crosses 11th.

Re: Bicycle Infrastructure
That's the route suggested for the Southside Greenway right? Good start!

Re: Bicycle Infrastructure
Blaisedell will be receiving a protected bikeway this year between 31st St and 40th St. It will be "vertically separated," which will be accomplished by only having one lane of car traffic. Public works is requesting an MSA variance.

Re: Bicycle Infrastructure
And Nicollet will be getting bicycle lanes south from 40th to 61st this year as well after a sealcoat.
sdho should use this as a reason to convince Richfield to connect Nicollet bike lanes north of 66th to Minneapolis.
Also, we're working on details for the 46th St and Nicollet intersection, since both streets are scheduled to get bike lanes this summer. The intersection is already a major CF, so the plan right now involves left turn lanes for each of the four legs to provide for queuing space and to get rid of sightline difficulties when opposing motorists are waiting to turn left. The biggest impact right now is moving the bus layover spot in front of the BP (NE corner) and eliminating 3 parking spots on the SW corner (Sun Street) in order to get this left turn lane in on Nicollet.

Awesome! Correct to assume it'll remain on the west side of Blaisdell (not explicitly stated)?Blaisedell will be receiving a protected bikeway this year between 31st St and 40th St. It will be "vertically separated," which will be accomplished by only having one lane of car traffic. Re: Bicycle Infrastructure
So does this mean they're only doing the protected bikeway from 31st to 40th this year, or that the portions north of Lake will somehow have two lanes squeezed in and thus won't require a variance? They're the same width (36' curb to curb), so I assume not unless they're thinking about removing parking.
Re: Bicycle Infrastructure
Also, no love for 1st Ave south of 31st this year?
Re: Bicycle Infrastructure
1st Ave south of 31st is already one lane, so I assume it wouldn't need a variance and thus wouldn't show up here. They really only need to add bollards and ban parking there...
Re: Bicycle Infrastructure
The whole of Lasalle/Blaisdell and 1st are on the 2016 CIP map here, along with downtown Park/Portland, 26th/28th west of 35W, Third across the bridge(!) and University SE. No other information on the website yet, but it looks like we'll be getting a clearer sense of this year's set of protected bikeways pretty soon now.So does this mean they're only doing the protected bikeway from 31st to 40th this year, or that the portions north of Lake will somehow have two lanes squeezed in and thus won't require a variance?
