A non-trivial portion of that facility appears to be a distribution center that probably would not go away if acquired by somebody that doesn't already have local operations.

It should also be noted that Kroger could, for example, just purchase the Cub Foods stores from SuperValu. It's not widely understood, but SuperValu is primarily a grocery wholesaler/distributor and has been divesting itself of most of its retail operations since its botched merger with Albertsons.

Which, by the way, was a clear example where the Minneapolis company acquired a major competitor and shifted operations from Boise to here.

Related to this Jamba Juice did cite the cost of business as a reason they are relocating to Texas, so companies do say things like that when it is an issue.

You don't really need skilled people to run a cold juice company.

Little known fact, my first job was the newly opened Jamba Juice City Center, back when it had store and stuff.

Plenty of skilled people in Texas (in the major cities, anyway), but yeah, there's no benefit to a company like that being headquartered in the Bay Area right now.

Just showing that companies do in fact cite cost of business as a reason for leaving, wasn't supposed to be a critical look at Jamba Juice as a company.

It's not a question of whether taxes play a role in company relocations, though. It obviously does in some cases. In question here was the notion that high taxes played a role in St. Jude's being acquired.

Jamba Juice $192 million market cap v St Jude at $22 billion. I wouldn't consider them even close to analgous. You could cite a lemonade stand's business strategy as well.

The article didn't specifically mention taxes in regards to Jamba's move, either. There are other financial issues that could well have been the deciding factors, especially given where they're moving from. Things like rent/real estate costs, high COL for employees, etc. It's a very expensive area in which to be located, and if you don't have a good business reason to be there, relocating starts to make a lot of sense.

This is just speculation at this point, but another MN company is a takeover target, and this one would hurt.

We really need to bring Teddy Roosevelt back from the grave.
The FTC just won an injunction against the Staples/Office Depot deal (again). Halliburton/Baker Hughes fell apart amidst a challenge from DOJ. Comcast dropped it's attempt to buy TimeWarner last year in the face of antitrust scrutiny.

Teddy's spirit lives.
