Southside - News & General Topics
Re: Southside - General Topics
This is great news, Stevens Square has wanted this house activated for years.
Really surprised by the size of some of these units. The smallest studio unit is only 275 square feet! I wonder what prices they're targeting.

While I'm glad to see a long-term use for this beautiful building, it's a shame that they couldn't get the Museum to work out. I know that money's always tight, but it really seems like the kind of concept that philanthropists would have stepped up to support.
Re: Southside - General Topics
Thanks! The reason I asked is there weren't any floor plans or elevations for it."Request: To convert the building to eight dwelling units and utilize the existing carriage house as one dwelling unit."
I agree about the museum, MNdible. On the other hand, these units look to be really cool/unique, which is something I like.

Re: Southside - General Topics
The two small units are a result of the existing interior staircase and egress/ hallway configuration. No way to connect them to a larger unit. They're asking for a variance for those.
The carriage house was converted to housing in the 1970s so it has no change other than 'two dwelling units on a single lot' designation.

Re: Southside - General Topics
I think the carriage house is already set up to be a residential unit (albeit one in need of renovation).

ALSO, the interior is well-preserved here. A bit sad they're boxing in the pocket doors and removing the interior finishes to accommodate all these units. That said, museum was going to tack on a not so pretty addition ala Kenzo Tange/MIA.

Re: Southside - General Topics
Why did 14th Ave get vacated and dead-ended there?
Re: Southside - General Topics
Was closed between 1970 and 1978. (I have no idea why.)

Seems weird that this isn't designed to front Lake Street...?

Maybe that's why they avoided CoW

Can one of the architects here explain to me what the deal is with highly reflective streets in renderings like these?

It's supposed to look like it has recently rained. Architectural photographers also often wet the pavement around structures before shooting them. It creates a more rich luminous effect.

Re: Southside - General Topics
Sooooo many car commercials use the recently-rained look to pavement.

And the same reason why you can buy spray for your car tires to make them always look wet...

Sue Weir linked to this photo on facebook:I think we've talked about this building somewhere. I'm guessing under that hideous siding is something of value.

That's why this building is so odd looking. It started life in 1892 as a church!

Also note the 1999 pics. I had forgotten how it looked before the vinyl. There was once some nice detail there.

Re: Southside - General Topics
The scale of those two pictures seems completely off. That is, the second one looks like a miniature model of the first and the grown man in the foreground of the former doesn't help one bit.
The problem with being an introvert online is that no one knows you're just hanging out and listening.

Yeah, I thought it looked weird too. I think it's because those windows from the first pic that are gone in the second are likely garden level...The scale of those two pictures seems completely off.
