Job Hunting General Discussion

Postby mamundsen » February 2nd, 2014, 10:01 am

I just applied for a finance job at Metropolitan Council. Does anyone on here work for them and would be willing to chat with me about what it's like?

Thanks, Mike

I didn't see a similar thread. If there is one, feel free to shut this one down and consolidate.

If anyone is looking or knows someone looking for mid-level IT-related job, hit me up. My company has several IT-related positions open doing software support as well as hardware support. Software support starts in the mid-50s. Not a ton of experience needed, just as long as you can convince us you know what you're talking about. Good way to get in a corporation.

We also seem to be perpetually hiring software and IT people. Usually we have a few jobs open in St. Paul at any one time. It's a great place to work and as a bonus you can talk to mulad every day!

I'll go ahead and throw out the call for anyone who may be experienced in web development, primarily back-end, and would like to work in downtown Minneapolis. Let me know. :)

Long time reader, 1st time poster. Wow. It's great to see lots of jobs available! The recession really is in the rear view mirror. Too bad they are all in IT.

I am looking for tips or connections to get my foot in the door with a construction company, real estate development firm or similar endeavor. I am early (1st decade) in my career and find that I have interests in the development and real estate industries. It is a very exciting time in Minneapolis-St Paul as the activity around town shows. I check this site constantly all day, every day. I do believe that my skills and work ethic and future potential are transferable, but it is hard to get an interview because I am looking to change industries.

I can tell you more of my background and interests in a PM. I do not want to expose everything on here, just in case my current employer or co-workers find this. :D

Please let me know if you can help me out. Thank you!!!

My sister in law works for the management of the IDS. They are looking for a Construction Manager with 0-3 years experience (somewhat flexible). I just thought is post here in case anyone is interested. Could be a great opportunity to work at the iconic Minneapolis building.

Let me know and I can ask her for the job posting.

Minneapolis is hiring Housing Inspectors. If you have any remote interest, you should apply, as there are several positions that need to be filled.

Check out the job posting here: http://www.ci.minneapolis.mn.us/jobs/opp/WCMS1Q-074686

It seems like every firm in town is doing well, right now. Take a look at the AIA MN job bank for starters, and research companies whose work fits your interests. Then start conversations with the hiring/HR people in those firms, usually they are listed on company websites.

HUD is hiring Community Planning and Development Representatives--four positions in Minneapolis, and I think one in Denver (check the announcement). This is the pitch from the Minneapolis Office Director:

"I’m excited to announce that the Minneapolis HUD Office of Community Planning and Development (CPD) is currently recruiting to fill four CPD Representative Positions. We are looking for smart and energetic individuals who have strong problem-solving and writing skills. We are in the process of rebuilding the office after losing a lot of staff so this would be an exciting opportunity for professionals who want to help shape the “new” office. The link below will take you to the job announcement for “external” candidates (i.e. outside of the Federal government). HUD is recruiting external candidates for positions at the GS-11 and GS-12 grade (pay) levels. The salary for a GS-11 position starts at $62,847 and for a GS-12 at $75,329. If you have internal “status” please go to the USAJobs web site and apply under the applicable announcement. The internal positions are posted at the GS-9 to GS-12 grade levels."

Note that being a veteran gives a huge point advantage, so if you are a veteran that will likely place you near the top of the list. I did this job for a long time so feel free to contact me if you have any questions about it. I am not particularly bullish on CPD with the incoming administration as I wouldn't be surprised if there is a special push to axe HOME and CDBG, but that remains to be seen.
