I believe all floors are in use now, but there may be a little space on a couple floors for expansion. Some floors have space dedicated to non-clinical use, so once Discovery square has its first building completed, some space will be freed up as they shift over there. The expansion could probably happen anytime, especially if Mayo receives a large donation, but I don't think the space is as urgently needed as more hospital space. It's possible that the Jacobson building phase II expansion will happen first.

Thanks for the correction. Jacobson "tower" is slated to start very soon, I believe.

Looking forward to it. Should be a pretty significant addition to the skyline once it's built, as it will be almost as tall as the Gonda building. The hospital facilities committee almost approved it this summer, but they ended up putting $185m into the expansions at Saint Marys, so it's been slightly delayed.

RSP Architects and St. Louis, Mo.-based HOK were selected design Discovery Square, which could include up to 2 million square feet of research and education space in the Destination Medical Center's Discovery Square district. The 20-block subdistrict is between Fourth Street Southwest and Sixth Street Southwest bordered by South Broadway and Fifth Avenue Southwest.

A skyway interchange in the sky. Sort of like calling this a public square, no? Image

If this skyway interchange is actually made, and made of the materials they want, then I'm assuming that the effects won't be nearly as bad as a freeway

Anyway, here's the draft for the 2017 DMC Design Guidelines. There's some interesting concepts in this that I hope actually come to fruition.

Mayo Clinic has announced another expansion to Saint Mary's.
Mayo Clinic is kicking off a $217 million, five-year "domino effect" of expansion and renovation projects on its Saint Marys Hospital campus.

The plan was announced this morning. The elaborate proposal includes adding three floors to the Generose Building, moving and upgrading the cardiac surgery facilities and expanding the Neonatal Intensive Care and Pediatric Intensive Care units.
The most visually dramatic piece of the multiyear project is building three more floors on top of the five-story, 24-year-old Generose Building.

Adding three floors will add 50,000 square feet to the building. About half of that space is expected to house Mayo Clinic's consolidated Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Hospital, currently based in the nearby Mary Brigh building.

DMC board approved $4.9 million in TIF for the first Mortensen building in Discovery Square. The next step for the building is approval from the Rochester City Council.

Mayo announced plans to build a new 4 story research building downtown after a $32 million donation from the Anna-Maria and Stephen Kellen foundation. Groundbreaking is expected in 2020. The building is expected to be around 64,000 square-feet and will be located just north of the Opus Building.

Mortenson has submitted plans for Two Discovery Square. The five story building is to be directly south of One Discovery Square, potentially connected at the base to each other.
The site development also maps out "an approximate future location" for a much smaller Three Discovery Square building on a grassy area at the southwest corner of Third Avenue Southwest and Fifth Street Southwest.

Gotta say, One Discovery Square looks like a suburban office park, not something belonging in a major downtown.

Does anyone have any updates on where the whole redevelopment project for Rochester stands? It seems that they have had some setbacks on the biggest proposals, but others have kept on moving. What projects are actually approved and moving ahead? What projects have stalled, or been cancelled. How close are they to hitting the targets that were set when the state approved the overall scheme?

Thanks Troy. The MPR story is very helpful and overall quite positive. High speed transportation between the Twin Cities and Rochester seems to make more sense than ever.
