Just so we're on the same page, transit (at least around here) used to be privately owned and operated, thought they made liberal use of the public ROW. I'm not an expert, but operations were funded by fares, while expansion was funded primarily by speculative real estate investment. At some point, the entire system fell apart, or some would say it was systematically dismantled.
From what I've read the streetcar operations in the Twin Cities never made a profit off passenger fares. The companies were making money off real estate along streetcar routes. In a way they were doing transit oriented development before the term was used.

The cities wanted cheap fares, but at the same time forced the streetcar companies to pay for their own maintenance and operations. TCRT wasn't being helped financially by any city despite not making any money.

When it comes to something like Brightline in Florida I'm okay with it because most of the ROW is also used by freight trains, and if it doesn't work out as a private operation it looks pretty easy for the state or municipalities to take over. Elon's O'Hare Express has a lot of promises that I'm skeptical can be met, and there are numerous other options that are proven to work.

How many "lids" are there in the metro? I can think of 3 - Highway 5 by Fort Snelling, Minnehaha and Highway 55, there's an exit ramp in St Paul that goe under the history center.

Is the I-94 Lowry Hill Tunnel a "lid"?

I don't know where the dividing line between tunnel and lid is with respect to the Lowry Tunnel, but I think Lindau Lane would count, along with Target Field/ABC ramps.

Not over a freeway, but Loring Greenway.

And don't forget the Maka Ska to Lake of the Isles future land bridge! Reminds me a lot of the Minnehaha land bridge.

I like it. Except it looks like the development constricts the HCRRA right-of-way making it difficult to colocate the Midtown Greenway trail and a double-track light rail line.

A parkway connection under the greenway would be cheaper and do more for the area in terms of accessibility and park use.

So are their plans going to be to have every house have a garage with an entrance to these tunnels? Or only houses where the residents can afford to have their garage hooked up to a tunnel system?

Thank god someone has finally solved the problem of wealthy commuters having to see anything other than the inside of their McMansion and their office!

Elon gonna Elon. I don't hate the guy the way some do--if he stopped today, even if Tesla were to go under, he has greatly accelerated broader efforts towards electrification, and that's an unqualified good thing. But I wish there was a wider recognition that almost all of his side projects are (a) not founded in any sound background or expertise in transportation or urban planning, and (b) transparent attempts to sell more automobiles by ensuring the next generation of infrastructure is as car-centric as today's. It's no different from what GM did back in the day, propagandizing for urban freeways (Futurama!), and buying up bus and streetcar lines.

This kind of reminds me of the tunnel Homer used to go to work in the Stonecutters Simpson’s episode.

The Boring Company’s proof of concept tunnel has broken through the opposite end recently.

Not transportation tunnel, but the 10th Ave project will have a new water main tunnel bored under the river to replace the main that’s attached to the bridge currently.

It will be interesting to see how a TBM works in the heavily cemented caliche soil of Southern Nevada.

I know you're just repeating the headline, but the Boring Company is not the same as the Hyperloop.

Is there any evidence other than hot air from Elon that there's something different about Hyperloop?
