Please tell me the Metro Transit labor contract isn't about to expire in 2014.

Any chance for a phased implementation like they did with Hiawatha opening to Ft. Snelling? Maybe to Prospect Park or even to Snelling, and operating out of the Blue Line carbarn?

It will almost certainly be
1. at the same time as the May drivers' pick.
2. not while the U is in session, and definitely not during finals week

Keep in mind, it isn't just the Green Line starting service, it's the entire restructuring of bus service, including new and heavily modified routes, and increased frequencies. Those "new" service hours are actually just reallocated hours from the cuts to the 16 & 94 and the elimination of the 50. That all has to happen at the same time. Before that happens, they'll do a week of free rides on the train, to get the big sightseer/visitor crowds out of the way before revenue service and bus restructuring happens.

My guess is free rides beginning the weekend of May 17-18, and revenue service will begin on Saturday May 24.

^I agree with all that, except I doubt they will have a full week of free rides. My guess would be free rides on Sat. and Sun. the 24th and 25th, then normal fares on May 26th. Restructured bus service would start on Sat. the 24th, as changes usually start on Saturdays.

So let's obviously turn this into an actual betting pool, right?

June 26, 2014 - exactly one decade after Hiawatha opened.
Way to rub in the sadness of our transportation system...

Well, we can call it that, but there should definitely be prizes regardless.

Apparently 2 or 3 vehicles drove over the double-crossovers by TPT in Lowertown that have been under construction for-effing-ever and caused "severe damage". Of course, this is a unique section of track with rubberized pads underneath (presumably to reduce vibration by the TV station). There are usually jersey barriers put up around them, but they must have gone away in order to make way for Sunday's clearance test. The cars also apparently drove in the wrong direction along 4th (eastbound). I also wouldn't discount the possibility that they drove on the sidewalk at some point.

I randomly walked by there yesterday and didn't see anything obviously out of place, but I had no idea anything had happened. Here's what they would have encountered, though. Not good for the tracks and equipment, and not good for the vehicles' undercarriages either:

This sounds like an intentional act of vandalism, if you ask me.

Can someone get a picture of the downtown st. paul maintenance facilty?
Is is completed yet?
I am curious how this interacts with the street and eventually the new ballpark.

I saw a picture of it somewhere online. It has a nice large clock above the doors, and windows facing Wall St.

There are also windows facing Prince St (south) as well as what looks like window-mimicking trellises (there are openings in the sidewalk below them, so I assume some sort of plants/landscaping will go there). Not sure what will happen with the north-facing wall, but I don't think they can do anything there until the Gillette building comes down. It looks like the retail space facing Wall St would also share the north-facing wall overlooking the Saints ballpark, so there is definitely some opportunity to do something really neat inside there...baseball and/or train-themed bar?
