Pillsbury "A" Mill Redevelopment
Re: Pillsbury "A" Mill Redevelopment
yea i love to see this building finally with a construction fence around it. over the years i've always had a fear it would suffer vandalism or fire because it didn't seem like a secured space. would've hate to see this industrial marvel have something happen to like the washburn mill across the river.
what's so cool is the river is diverted under this building. i hope the developer can realize a plan to incorporate some historic public displays or interpretative spaces. i want this building to be more than just residential and achieve it's maximum use potential.

It's certainly great that this building is going to see re-use, but I can't help but think that in ten or twenty years there might be some regret that one of the city's most impressive and iconic buildings hasn't seen a better use. As someone who works in tax-credit housing (including an artist loft property), I can tell you that it is very difficult to make these projects work. The developer will do fine, no so much the owner and management company. Because of income restrictions, these artist loft units tend to be difficult to rent. And it will be locked into use as low-income housing for 30 years.
Too bad the public library was just built a decade ago- this would have been an amazing space for it. Oh well, still good to see it used for something.

I remember seeing some renderings back when this was first being proposed and they ARE going to be using that water diverter feature on this site. I don't remember exactly HOW they're using it (perhaps just a backdrop), but I know it's in the plans.

Great to see this project moving forward.
From the Strib article:
From the Strib article:
I certainly hope that they're able to do something meaningful along these lines, rather than just a couple of plaques.Because the site has long been a symbol of the city’s milling history, there’s been considerable interest in making those resources available to the public. Metz said that he’s still working with various agencies, including the Minnesota Historical Society and the St. Anthony Falls Heritage Board, on how to incorporate interpretive elements and make the most of the water infrastructure.
Re: Pillsbury "A" Mill Redevelopment
At $575K p/unit, there must be a substantial non-residential component to this project.

Re: Pillsbury "A" Mill Redevelopment
I might be wrong, but I would guess the high cost per unit is because of the historic preservation aspect. Paying that much for new construction wouldn't make sense for affordable housing. I have no idea if it makes sense for historic preservation.

It's going to be so exciting to see the lights glowing from the windows of this old gem again!
Re: Pillsbury "A" Mill Redevelopment
Can you even imagine how complicated this project must be? Note to self: Try to set up site tour...

The "Pillsbury's Best Flour" sign is going to be rehabbed using neon-simulating LEDs:

Yes!!!
Re: Pillsbury "A" Mill Redevelopment
I noticed that since last weekend the building has lights! Every window is illuminated at night! Looks really nice. I wonder how long it's been since they threw the switch off and the building has been siting dark on the river for all these years.
