Presumably you're not a fan.

Stumbled on this from the end of October:
People that actually use Dinkytown want restaurants, bike access, don't care about parking:

According to the Daily's annual finals week edition, Al's Breakfast is going to be converted into a one-story, one-unit luxury apartment. Sadly, the Daily no longer puts up the finals edition as though it were the regular daily paper; it's only available to view as PDF. If it were actually on their front page, and hence picked up by Google, we'd probably see all the Save Dinkytown crowd collectively have heart attacks when they read it.

I think Bill Lindeke snapped this and tweeted its ass:

Highlights of the article:
Rent will be $8000 a month
The student is moving in with a roommate, they ate at Al's once so they thought it would be cool.
The owner was bought out with pancakes and a promise of a UDS job
One of the amenities is a fold up tanning bed
Save Dinkytown was just too tired to fight it
The Varsity was torn down to put up a rental office for the apartment.

I don't know if anybody caught these, but Bill Huntzicker with the TC Daily Planet did a really nice job covering all things Dinkytown, aside from his tendency to not talk to college-aged people. My favorite article was a detailed history into Al's Breakfast:

http://www.tcdailyplanet.net/news/2013/ ... reputation

He also wrote a nice blurb about the businesses, both chain and local, that have come and gone in Dinkytown:

http://www.tcdailyplanet.net/news/2013/ ... u-remember

Bill also covered the SAP process with minute detail, talking to both the DBA types and the Dorans of the world. Retrospectively, his coverage on Dinkytown was probably the best in the city.

Meanwhile, a Dunn Bros. in Dinkytown will be closing its doors this spring, after 14 years, because its owner is unable to renew his lease with the landlord. The owner is actively looking for a new suitable site to relocate the shop.
Does anybody know where that Dunn Bros is? I wish the article stated the address. The only one I can think of is the one off of the Dinkytown Greenway in the Education Sciences Building on campus.

I could easily see a Dunn Bros succeeding in one of the retail slots in the Venue once it opens, though.

EDIT - I just remembered there is also a Dunn Bros on the corner of 6th Ave SE and University in Marcy-Holmes, perhaps it is that one?

Hope not, that one is nice. The Dunns in the old brick buildings are much more inviting than the Dunns in the new complexes (like the one on University/Emerald.

I thought Restaurant Alma was taking over the Dunn Bros. that used to be next to it. That can't be what this is referring to, is it?

That is probably what they are referring to if Alma is taking over. Glad that restaurant is expanding because its very good and usually very crowded from what Ive seen, but still sad to see a cool coffee shop in an old building leave. Im sure Santana Foods across the street is happy about it, though.

Is there any indication what retail will go into the Bridges yet?

I dont think any retail is going into The Bridges. I think the ground floor is apartment lobby/tenant lounge facing University, at least according to the city documents I found.

House fire in Dinkytown last night around 2:30am at the corner of 13th Ave SE and 8th St SE. I sat next to the guy (Mike Brennan) who helped the tenants out of the house at Al's Breakfast this morning - no injuries reported, but a scary situation.

I'm sorry to hear that......however, being unfamiliar with the area, is that anywhere close to where Doran's hotel proposal was?

No, this was more in the neighborhood section of Dinkytown - technically Marcy-Holmes neighborhood - and was about 4 blocks away from the commercial core. However, this was right next to The Rail. That project could have easily been damaged if the winds were shifted.
