Urban Philanthropy

Postby MNdible » October 10th, 2014, 10:12 am

Spinning off from a conversation that's brewing in the Detroit thread, I do wonder why the plutocracy in Minneapolis hasn't been stepping up their game to make meaningful donations to improving the urban public realm.

The last (and only?) major play that I can think of was the good doctor McGuire's contribution to make Gold Medal Park happen.

I had been hopeful that somebody would step up with a major contribution to build the Planetarium atop the library, but that never got traction.

Now, with The Yard and Peavey Plaza and the RiverFirst plans and the Waterworks and so on, it seems like there are some real opportunities for our deep pocketed friends to step up and take these spaces to the next level. But will they?
