We talked about it in the Cedar Ave thread for a while, then it got its own.

I wonder what will become of the old Walgreens building, a Somali market perhaps?

There should be a stipulation that when Walgreens vacates one of their awful cinderblock buildings (with its ass to the streetcorner), they should have to tear it down. Walgreens seems to be in a mode of major building replacement right now (here, 5400 Lyndale, Lake & Blaisdell next to Kmart, downtown, W Broadway, NE?, etc.) That's at least 4 or 5 just in Minneapolis. In every case but downtown, the buildings seem very likely for reuse rather than redevelopment.

If there's a market to fully redevelop, then that's great. On the other hand, these stores could become affordable retail space to start-ups.

Maybe we could make some quick cash re-purposing them.

Twincitizen did a sweet fantasy map of this area. I just replied to that to try to build on his idea and incorporate the city councilmember's response to him.

Elizabeth Glidden reports Jardin Magico is taking over the long-vacant Nokomis Lanes space at 41st/Bloomington.

Man they're expanding fast. We looked at their place at 39th/Nicollet, it was really nice, lots of extras included in the price (they did cloth diapers during the day which would save you 5-6 of your own disposables, all food/milk included, and full Spanish immersion if that's your thing), but they were just too expensive. Not anywhere near Kinderberry Hill, Montessori schools, or the like.

Anyway, if we want Minneapolis to be a place that grows its population through families as well as new apartments/condos, this is a really positive sign.

We also looked at the 39th/Nicollet location. It was the first daycare we toured and it made it really hard to evaluate any others—it's a pretty incredible operation. But like RBY, we just couldn't afford it. We're paying $100/wk less at the place we ended up choosing, but we did have to give up some of the perks (cloth diapers, for one). baby.shoes is 6.5 months old, though, so the real benefits of immersion or Montessori-style education are a little ways off.

The building once known as Joe's Chicken Shack, a fixture at the corner of 26th Street and 1st Ave. S., is undergoing substantial renovations,

I think this building has been in the process of being renovated for quite some time now.

Yes! I was getting worried something bad would happen to this one.

I found it odd that two years ago they removed the lovely two-story bay windows and replaced them with flat windows. Also, what's going on with the at adjacent lot? It's been empty since like 2007? Condo bust I thought.

Can someone post rendering of the new Walgreens? Would it be safe to bet it will look something like this? Image

Many of the new stores seem to be just a little different. Here are a few from around the country.

Ugh. I can't stand those faux second stories. Just more stripmall ornamentation.

There's an actual second story on the new West Broadway location. It's up for lease.

A new Walgreens for Lake & 32nd Ave: http://minneapolismn.gov/www/groups/pub ... 131493.pdf
twincitizen posted this a while back, shows the layout and a rendering or two, not sure if things have changed much since then.

Renders are on page 30/31, it doesn't look like much of anything, which is nice. The building itself looks to be 1.5 stories or so, but that's based mostly on the height, not some ridiculous ornamation on top. Basically a pretty plain brick looking building.
