A fun idea came up just now while talking with a friend. If Minnesota were to change its flag within the next few years, we could profusely show off the new flag when we host the superbowl in 2018, which would be pretty cool.

Our flag isn't distinctive nor appealing. Visuals are often a key part of branding, and introducing a better flag is an easy and tangible way to advance views of our state. Things like Statistics, anecdotes, and slogans meant to influence public opinion become more effective when paired with some sort of image, video, music, etc to help anchor them in one's memory. Plus having a cooler looking flag is positive in and of itself. There are a few pages that touch on the topic.

I like the city flag more than the state flag. I've always interpreted our state flag as having a white man running a native off of his land, musket at the ready and all. Very Pawnee. Not a lot of flags have guns on them!

Those first two links are closest to the Texas flag (the second in particular). There was a short period where the Republic of Texas had a blue flag with a yellow five-pointed star called the Burnet Flag (and that bears a close resemblance to the Bonnie Blue Flag), which was an unofficial flag of the Confederacy during the Civil War.

I kind of like the flag in the third link, but the ring of stars around a compass rose seems a bit redundant and noisy. I think a compass rose could be better than a simple star (here's a nice logo, for instance) but I'm not a big fan of that yellow one. Part of me likes the guidon shape of the design, especially since it makes it resemble the shape of the state a bit, but the military connotations of a guidon bother me.

If people want to stick with a five-pointed star, I'd suggest giving it a slant kind of like in the old North Stars logos.
